With Islamic State militants advancing on Kurdish territory in Iraq and Turkey, Kurdish fighters are employing ever more inventive ways to defend themselves.

Faced with US army tanks and advanced weapons taken from the retreating Iraqi army, the Kurdish fighters have been busily converting farm vehicles, trucks and buses into a collection of weird and wonderful fighting machines they hope will hold off the IS fighters.

Photos from the Twitter feed ISIS2HELL show that the fighting has forced the under equipped People’s Protection Groups (YPG) to add steel plates and soviet-era guns to their civilian vehicles as a last resort.

Recent fighting near the border town of Kobane in northern Syria has forced around 150,000 people to flee across the border into Turkey.

Some of the Mad Max-style tanks have recently been deployed in the battle for Kobane, a key town that would help the IS extend its control over a large part of the Turkish Syrian border.
