Second Obama security breach: President rode elevator with an armed convicted felon

The president, along with his secret service, rode in an elevator with a contractor who was working for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention security firm. The security breach occurred while President Obama was visiting the CDC Atlanta on Sept. 16.

Secret Service agents grew suspicious of the contractor when he refused to stop recording video with his cell phone. The Secret Service did not screen the contractor who was later found to have been carrying a gun.

Obama and most of his detail exited the elevator but several agents stayed behind to question the man. A supervisor for the CDC security firm fired the contractor immediately. Upon doing a background check on the contractor, Secret Service learned that the he was a convicted felon.

The contractor then handed over his weapon to the surprise of the Secret Service agents who were not aware he was carrying a weapon while in the elevator with the president.

This incident occurred three days prior to the security breach in which Omar Gonzalez was able to sneak into the White House. Secret Service Director Julia Pierson said in a press conference that due to budget cuts, the Secret Service is operating at 550 employees below optimal level.
