Aircraft hacking: WiFi and advanced cockpits make modern jets more vulnerable to cyberattacks

New planes with WiFi connections and advanced cockpits are more vulnerable to hacking, and in the worst case scenario, hackers could possibly take control of an aircraft, according to a new report published by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
Onboard firewalls are designed to protect avionics from cyber attacks but they can become vulnerable if the inflight entertainment system and flight control use the same routers.
Through a WiFi connection on board, hackers could theoretically gain access to the flight control computer systems.
Computer systems on aircraft could also be compromised if passengers unknowingly visit websites infected with a virus or malware.
Gerald Dillingham, one of the authors of the report, said in an interview with CNN that newer planes such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the Airbus A350 and A380, are at a greater risk of cyber attack as the cockpits of these planes share the same WiFi system as passengers.
