A mentally unbalanced ex-con murdered the director of a homeless shelter in New York City on Tuesday after trying to rape her. Ana Isabel Charle, a 36-year-old mother of two who was originally from Barcelona, Spain, had spent the last four years in New York working as the director of a homeless shelter in the Bronx.
Officials say Ana was walking to her car when she encountered West Spruill, a man with a criminal record and mental health issues. The armed suspect is believed to have forced Ana into her car, stripped her naked, and attempted to sexually assault her. She somehow managed to escape from the vehicle, but she was pursued by the suspect who was also not clothed.
She did not make it far. After tripping and falling to the ground, Spruill stood over her and shot her three times with a 40. caliber handgun. She received gunshot wounds to her temple, cheek and chest and was pronounced dead at hospital.
Authorities believe Spruill then returned to her car, dressed himself and walked away. Spruill was soon arrested and the alleged murder weapon found in his bag. Community leaders said city officials had not responded to repeated requests for additional security at the shelter that houses over 20 sex offenders as well as mentally unstable individuals such as the suspect.
