The Low life is an unpretentious but deeply felt film directed by George Hickenlooper. It boasts of a solid ensemble cast. A brilliant Yale Graduate, John (Rory Cochrane), who also aspires to be a writer, shifts base to Los Angeles. Guided by his uncle’s advice, John embarks on a relentless spree of changing jobs with the purpose of living a detached life. All of a sudden, a frustrated John loses his cool and quits his job. Gradually moving towards the lower strata of society, he becomes a slumlord’s henchman and rent collector. Here, he meets Bevan (Kyra Sedgwick), an over-the-top alcoholic nymphomaniac. While he throws out tenants and mends plumbing day in and day out, John turns into a voracious drunkard. But then an unforeseen tragedy compels him to retrospect the events of his life. He realizes that he should actually start caring for others in order to achieve his dreams.
