A New York middle school teacher is in hospital after suffering a violent assault from one of her student's mothers.

According to ABC7, the attack took place on Wednesday at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School.

Annika McKenzie, 34, allegedly confronted teacher Catherine Engelhardt because she believed Engelhardt had grabbed her 12-year-old daughter, the New York Post reports.

McKenzie then allegedly shoved Engelhardt against a wall, put her in a headlock and threw her to the floor. Other students, including McKenzie's 14-year-old niece, joined in on the attack, kicking and punching Engelhardt until another teacher stepped in.

Engelhardt was unconscious and taken to hospital. McKenzie and her niece were arrested at the scene.
