Many politicians have tried for years to chip away at gun rights… but it looks like Ted Cruz is definitely not one of them.

The Texas senator and 2016 presidential candidate was just asked about his views on the right to bear arms, and his answer is getting a lot of attention.

Cruz didn’t sugarcoat his views about the Second Amendment. Instead, he defended the role of the Constitution even when popular opinion sways in different directions.

“When you asked about the role of public opinion polls, when it comes to constitutional rights, what matters is what the Bill of Rights says,” Cruz said. “It doesn’t matter what might be popular at the moment.”
