00:10 Shelby came in as a stray, and aside from having a little torn ear,
00:16 she was in pretty good condition.
00:18 She was a little on the thin side, which isn't unusual, but
00:21 otherwise she was in really good health.
00:23 Shelby is ten years young.
00:25 She only has two of her bottom canines left, but
00:28 that doesn't stop her from eating, she can eat wet and dry food.
00:31 >> We're not really clear about her complete background, however,
00:35 we know that she was surrendered at the shelter at ten, which is unfortunate.
00:41 >> I think the only thing holding Shelby back is her age.
00:44 When people hear ten years old, it scares them.
00:47 But I had a cat who lived to be 23, and it's not that uncommon, so
00:50 she's got probably more years ahead of her than she does behind her.
00:54 >> Shelby is beautiful.
00:56 She's an Abyssinian mix of some sort.
00:59 She's like this stunning gold color.
01:00 She has these big eyes.
01:02 >> I think Shelby is special because she does just have one of those
01:05 personalities that gets along with everybody.
01:09 Another thing that's really awesome about Shelby is even though she's an older cat,
01:13 she still has a playful kitten side.
01:15 She loves toys, especially the laser pointer.
01:17 Nothing gets her more excited than a laser pointer.
01:20 She'll chase it for hours.
01:21 If you have someone who wants to sit on the couch and play with her,
01:25 this is the cat who's gonna do that.
01:27 >> At the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Los Angeles,
01:30 we have at any given day over 100 animals here.
01:34 >> Best Friends' mission is to bring about a time of no more homeless pets.
01:37 And here in LA, we're trying to bring LA to a no-kill status,
01:41 which would be a 90% save rate out of the city shelters.
01:45 A lot of people come into the shelters wanting to adopt kittens, so
01:48 it's harder to find homes for older cats.
01:50 People have a lot of preconceived notions that they are going to die soon,
01:56 that they're not gonna bond with the people, which is far from true.
02:00 Kittens are a lot of work.
02:01 They're just like children.
02:02 They need supervision.
02:03 They need to be taught manners.
02:05 Adult cats come in knowing all of those things,
02:07 especially if they've been in a home, which Shelby probably was at some point.
02:11 >> Adopting a senior animal,
02:13 I personally feel is one of the most rewarding things you can do.
02:17 They have a confidence and an air about them that is very grateful.
02:21 I think they somehow know that you could have picked a kitten, or
02:25 you could have picked a puppy, and you picked me.
02:28 >> Shelby would be good in just about any home.
02:31 She is great with other cats.
02:34 She's good with most people, children.
02:36 But she'd also be fine in a home without another cat,
02:38 with somebody who works all the time, who's not home,
02:42 who just needs an easygoing cat that's not necessarily really needy.
02:46 She's unique and interesting and beautiful, and
02:48 there's something very wise about her.
