00:00You
00:30Hello, I am Barry McLaughlin and I'm here at the welcoming event for the 2012 American
00:44Humane Association's Hero Dog Awards located here at the Zoom Room Hollywood in Los Angeles,
00:50California. We have an epic action-packed hour for you only on The Pet Collective and in this
00:55hour we are going to introduce to you some of the most amazing dogs in the United States as
01:01chosen by you. Take it away Megan. Hey guys my name is Megan Mesmer and I am here. The energy
01:10in this room is crazy. We are going to meet all the finalists for the Hero Dog Awards this year
01:152012. There are eight distinct categories. Those are the guide dogs for the blind, the hearing dogs
01:21for the deaf, military dogs, therapy dogs, service dogs, law enforcement and arson dogs, search and
01:28rescue dogs and finally the wild card the emerging hero dog which could be any dog that's sitting
01:35next to you at home. You can vote still guys it ends at midnight tonight so get online www.herodogawards.org
01:47and vote you could be the next winner.
01:50Shanna my hero dog is my service dog Holly. Holly is a Shetland sheep dog. She is a very fun dog.
02:06I got Holly to train and compete with in agility, obedience and herding and when I was 17 I had
02:15my first seizure and Holly started learning to the seizures before I was even diagnosed with
02:22epilepsy and then after I was diagnosed we found a two-year service dog program in Utah and we
02:29became a certified service dog team. The way Holly alerts is she will whine and pot me about five
02:35minutes before a seizure then she will stand back and bark if I don't listen. Since she's become my
02:42service dog she's really significantly changed my life. The warning that she gives me the alert
02:49before a seizure occurs gives me a chance to get away from dangerous situations and it gives me it
02:57gave me back my independence when everything was taken away. Because of her I'm able to live a
03:02normal life. We go to elementary schools and teach children about service dogs and every time we're
03:10stopped in the store we answer people's questions. You should vote for Holly because she is truly a
03:17hero. She's changed my life and she's inspired me to help others. If Holly does win her chosen
03:25charity IAADP will get an additional $10,000 on top of the $5,000 that Holly already won for them.
03:34All right I am here with Shanna and Holly. I said it wrong didn't I? Shanna I said it right.
03:43All right. It's Holly. So tell me about this connection that you two have. Holly she's pretty
03:50amazing. She it's a bond that I've never had with a dog before. She I swear we can read each other's
03:58minds. She is just pretty amazing. She is so tuned in and knows exactly what I'm thinking and she's
04:04such a fun dog. You finish each other's sentences? No it doesn't go that far. And so is she always on
04:13the job? Does she does she play? Is there something a notice that you give her when it's playtime or
04:18how does that work? She's always ready. She's always because she's a seizure alert dog but she
04:24does have time off and she lounges on the bed and she was my agility dog. She loves to play. She
04:33is a fan that has a fantastic personality. She is extremely photogenic as well. It's every time I
04:40see her she's posing. Oh she loves her picture taken. She'll go and set herself up for a picture.
04:45That's amazing. Well thank you so much. Good luck to you both. This is Shanna and Holly. Don't forget
04:51to vote for them if they are your favorites. Thank you. And I am here with the executive producer and
05:08creator of the Hero Dog Awards Sean Hawkins. Sean celebrity right here. What does it really take to
05:18be a hero dog? Well that's the really amazing thing that we believe that every dog is a hero
05:24dog. Ordinary dogs doing extraordinary things make them hero dogs. So whether it's a good
05:30squirrel chaser or a frisbee fetcher or as you're gonna meet in just a minute Gabe who sniffs out
05:36bombs for our soldiers overseas. They're all heroes to us and we're so thrilled that the American
05:41Humane Association is producing the Hero Dog Awards for the second year in a row. Good luck
05:46to everybody and please vote HeroDogAwards.org. And I got a question for you. So this is the
05:53second year and how has it changed from last year to this year? Believe it or not last year we had
06:00600,000 people participate in our contest. This year we have 3.5 million Americans online voting
06:07for these dogs. The contest is still open so please go to HeroDogAwards.org and vote for
06:14your favorite dog tonight. And I went online to www.HeroDogAwards.org and I looked at some of
06:21the judges and some of that. Would you like to talk a little bit about how you have some top-name
06:26talent in here judging for you? Well we're thrilled to have people like Victoria Stilwell who
06:31everybody knows from It's Me or the Dog as one of our celebrity judges. Also Whoopi Goldberg,
06:36the amazing Betty White and Candy Spelling are all part of this year's contest. So we are so
06:41thrilled to have panel on board and wish everybody luck tonight. Yeah that's great. I mean what what
06:48do you want an audience watching? It's November 8th right that it's broadcast on Hallmark Channel.
06:54You'll get to see the winner. What do you want an audience to take away from from that night?
06:58American Humane Association is a 140 year old agency and we're the only agency in America that
07:05protects both animals and children. So the goal of the HeroDog Awards is to showcase that bond
07:11between animals and people and so we hope people watching at home understand that connection. We
07:17believe that dogs show a marvelous interaction with people and we hope that that that compassion
07:22spreads to other animals as well. That's great and I have to ask you a personal question. Do you have
07:29a dog or an animal of your own? I have three HeroDogs at home. Now why are they or one of
07:35them a hero? What's your best heroic story? I think they're all heroes. I think the best part is
07:41when we come home from a hard day at work having all three dogs jump on my partner and I and and
07:47and greet us and and lick our faces is the best part of my day. That's great. Do you have any
07:53other animals? No three dogs is plenty. Very well. Well Sean I really appreciate you hosting this
08:00this event. I think everybody here I think just that the idea that you sparked to have this award
08:06is just amazing so thank you so much. Well and thanks to our partners at Premantle and the Pet
08:12Collective and the Zoom Room guys for hosting this tonight. The Zoom Room rocks. Thank you so much.
08:20That was Sean Hawkins guys executive producer and creator of the HeroDog Awards. He was
08:30four years old. He was just so full of energy I felt like he needed a job. I wasn't even involved
08:37in search and rescue at the time but together we joined the team and we taught each other. We're
08:42still teaching each other today. Sut is a scent discriminating wilderness search dog. Sut and I
08:49are involved with a team that's called West Virginia Canine Search and Rescue. We are called
08:53out by the state police, local police, fire and rescue. Sut was nominated for the HeroDog Awards.
08:59He was able to locate a lost hunter in the wilderness in the mountains of West Virginia.
09:04He's a 78 year old diabetic and it was at the time it was 24 degrees before we even went up
09:10on the mountain. I just can't imagine my life without Sut. He came into my life at a very sad time
09:15and he has just been a joy and we love doing search and rescue together and I think we'll
09:22we'll always be involved as long as he can do it and I can do it. The HeroDog Awards are so
09:26important for recognition to the to the animals for all the hard work that they have done is just
09:32wonderful. Give me more. Yeah he's a good boy. I am here with Lori and her search and rescue dog Sut.
09:43You guys are an amazing team. Thank you. Thank you very much. So you were just telling me that Sut
09:48went from no obedience to being certified. How does that process work? What did you guys do?
09:54Well we adopted him when he was four and he didn't have very much obedience at all
09:58and we have trained for two years and was able to get him certified with the help of my team
10:03West Virginia Canine Search and Rescue. That's amazing and how often does he go out and search
10:09and rescue? Well it's almost like feast or famine. Sometimes we'll have three searches in a week and
10:12then we may not have any for months but you know just whenever they call us we're here ready and
10:18available. Yeah and what what kind of items do you guys use for him to find? Is it clothing or
10:24socks? What do you guys use for that? Yeah we can use any kind of like if they leave a jacket behind
10:29or a sock or they can search without even a sin article. They'll just they find a person then if
10:36that's not the one we're looking for we just tell them good boy good boy keep searching and they
10:39you know go on because sometimes they're lost and they don't leave a sin article. So sometimes
10:45you're just constantly finding people in the woods and then leaving them there because it's
10:48the wrong person? Yeah we'll just leave him in the woods. No most of the time we do have sin articles
10:53and that does help. And now when when you're at home is he does he do the same thing for fun or
10:59what does he do to relax? Oh yeah we have a in-ground swimming pool so you know labs you can't
11:04keep him out of the water and he loves his tennis ball and so that's what he likes and that's his
11:09reward when he finds somebody either at training or on a search is his ball tennis ball that's the
11:15party we have after he finds someone. That's my kind of party too. So now if you if you were to
11:20get lost in Los Angeles would he be able to find you pretty easily? I'm his mother well of course
11:25he'd be able to find me. That's the right answer. All right this is Lori and Soot. If you'd like to
11:31vote for them make sure to do so before midnight tonight. Thank you so much and good luck. Thank
11:35you. Absolutely.
11:39So
12:02Zoom Room is an agility and social club for your dog. We do a lot of different group classes,
12:07obedience, puppy socialization, senior stretch classes, puplotties, you name it we do it here
12:13and it's a way for people to come in with their pets and kind of have a recreational
12:17sort of bonding time with them. What was it for you to say?
12:27Are we skipping one of the interviews you said?
12:30I hear dog awards have been very exciting. I'm really excited to go to the awards. It's going
12:37to be fun. I think it's going to be a really good time to see everyone and hear everyone's story.
12:42I'm going to bring some Kleenex just in case I hear it's kind of an emotional event.
12:53I love what AHA does and it's really important that people treat animals humanely.
13:00Regardless of the situation and to hear about how dogs can impact lives and save lives
13:07and enrich lives. Even your own dog can have that kind of effect on you. So your dog doesn't
13:13have to be a search and rescue dog to be your hero and I think it's inspiring to hear the
13:18stories when they are but it kind of makes you take a second look at how your own dog affects
13:23your life. I am here with Laura London. She is the director of training and an instructor here at
13:38Zoom Room Hollywood. Laura, how does it feel to have all of these dogs and all these people here
13:48at your place? Like a normal Saturday. No, it's great. Normally they're not drinking in class
13:55but it's wonderful. It's great to see everybody out and all the dogs behaving so well. It's
13:59wonderful. Well I got to ask you to let everybody at the Pet Collective know, what is Zoom Room?
14:06How did it start? What sort of sparked the idea and all that? Well our founder and creator Jamie
14:10Van Wy started the first Zoom Room in 07. Yeah in Culver City. She had it in her mind. It just
14:18wasn't real. So now we're at 12 locations nationwide. We're an agility and social club for canines. We do
14:26obedience, puppy socialization. We do some scent discrimination classes. We've got something for
14:32every dog of every age group. That's awesome. So you said you have puppy training. Now what would
14:38a puppy coming into the Zoom Room Hollywood do? What would they do first and sort of what would
14:45you do with that little puppy of energy? Well we start with dogs as early as eight weeks old
14:50in our puppy socialization class. So from 8 to 16 weeks we mainly have them come and learn how to
14:55play properly with each other and expose them to new things, other people, sometimes the agility
15:00equipment to build confidence. So that's usually where we start. Then we have puppy obedience and
15:04puppy agility and it goes on and on. And I asked you this before and you gave me a funny story.
15:10I asked you if you could train puppies to socialize with kitties and you said absolutely not. And I
15:15want to hear about that story where someone brought a kitty in here. Well I said we didn't do it here.
15:20Like I don't do it here. But yeah the last Hero Dog Party we had a few months ago someone brought
15:26I think she was like 10 week old kitten on a harness and was like she's held it most of the
15:32time and I was like this is just gonna be really bad. But all the past Hero Dogs were here and they
15:36were very cool with it. They were like hanging out on the surfboard with the kitty and everything was
15:41so ricochet was there. It was all wonderful. I guess that's why they call them Hero Dogs right?
15:46Absolutely. They're heroic that they don't go after kittens. Hero Kitty. Well thank you so much
15:53Laura for hosting this is an awesome event. It's our pleasure Megan.
16:00Hi my name is Christina and my hearing dog Tatiana is a Hero Dog finalist. I got Tatiana
16:08about a year and a half ago from Canine Companions for Independence in Santa Rosa, California.
16:13She is mainly my hearing dog but she also has some basic service dog skills. About two months
16:20after having Tatiana at home she realized I had was having trouble breathing and alerted my
16:28parents. She insisted they follow her to my room and when they found me I was already not breathing.
16:35I was pale, blue around my lips. So they quickly were able to dial 9-1-1 get me the help I needed
16:40and transport me to the nearest hospital. And it was in the hospital when the paramedics approached
16:45my parents and asked them how they had known when I was in trouble that they realized that
16:49it was Tatiana who had been the one who saved my life. She's a Hero Dog not only for having
16:56saved my life and giving me a second chance at independence and at life which is so priceless
17:01but it's also the work she does educating people around her and the joy she brings to so many
17:09people out there in addition to myself. I am here with Christina and Tatiana. Are you excited? Yes
17:17very much so. So tell me a little bit about the the bond between you two and how that works.
17:22Well I got Tatiana a year and a half ago from Canine Companions for Independence and our
17:28connection was immediate. I don't know what was it about her eyes or something but I felt
17:34an immediate bond with her and so much so that it wasn't two months after having her that she
17:39ended up saving my life. And had there been a lot of things that she has been just not
17:47be aware of but she also has you know some basic service dog skills and she'll do stuff that
17:54I don't you know I don't even expect her to do like somehow she developed that distance to alert
18:00me when I have many years this episode which basically make me really dizzy. So she gives me
18:05some you know warning in advance and I can sit down and since then I haven't fallen or
18:10got any injuries from that like I did before. So there are some things that she does that go beyond
18:17her basic training. Including getting a degree with you and she was up on stage. That's right
18:24we graduated from we got a master's degree from Purdue University and she was awarded an honorary
18:30degree in friendship and guidance and the funny part is that she actually got her diploma before
18:35I did and she got it on stage. So is there a lot of rivalry between you two? Not at all we're a team
18:43a hundred percent team yes. And what do you guys do for fun? Well she loves to swim I call her the
18:50Michael Phelps in Canaan form. She has a lot of friends and with her give her a ball and a pool
18:57as to most labs and she's in eternal bliss. Fantastic well this is Christina and Tatiana
19:04so if this is who do you like to vote for for 2012 make sure to do it before tonight. Now Megan tell
19:08me what you got over in the zoom room. Thank you so much good luck. And don't forget you guys you
19:15have till midnight tonight to vote for the hero dog of 2012. All of these dogs that are here are
19:23waiting for your vote tonight by midnight that the results will come out November 8th on Hallmark
19:29channel we'll find out but you have till midnight go to www.herodogawards.org and the link is right
19:36beneath you if you're watching this. We have coming up a nice package of our hero dog hopefuls for
19:452013. We have Bailey the massage therapy dog and we have Yogi the arson dog. Now these dogs are
19:52just hoping to be the next hero dog let's take a look. Hi I'm Todd and I'm nominating dog Bailey
20:02for the therapy dog awards for the 2012 hero dog awards. I have a very stressful job and at the end
20:13of the day I have tons of knots in my back emails meetings deadlines the knots got so bad that my
20:20life stopped I couldn't send emails I couldn't push the water button for the water bubbler
20:27so I couldn't drink water. I was an office plant basically as useful as an office plant.
20:33Well lucky for me I have a Chilwini named Bailey who is also a massage therapy dog. I would be
20:43one huge knot on the floor for the rest of my life if Bailey had not saved me. Just a knot
20:52just one huge knot in the floor that's it nothing more than a knot that can never be untangled
21:00because of Bailey my knots are all gone and now I can give an effective presentation
21:06I just got a girlfriend and guess what I can push the button on the water bubbler
21:12which means I can drink water again and that's why I'm nominating Bailey. Bailey is my hero my hero dog.
21:22Hi I'm Haley and this is Yogi I'm nominating him for the 2012 hero dog awards because he saved my life eight years he tried to warn me that there are bombs underneath that sink and if I open that up and don't remove the bombs which are aerosol cans my kitchen will explode and he tried to tell me over and over and over again and did I listen to him no because he's a dog
21:52all I heard was bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark he was trying to tell me something and I just blew him off because he's a dog
22:03if I would have listened to Yogi one time in the eight years that he was trying to tell me mom
22:07those cans underneath your sink are bombs then maybe that can wouldn't have exploded in my kitchen
22:12whoa he's my little hero he saved my life the house just caught on fire like there could still be
22:23an explosion in my kitchen if it wasn't for Yogi and I don't think there's any other dog
22:27on planet earth that would blow up somebody's kitchen to warn them that there's explodables
22:32underneath their sink so I thank him for doing that with all my heart I mean I've been trying
22:37to get him to do safety seminars for the fire department or maybe write a book or something
22:43so that's why I'm nominating Yogi for the 2012 hero dog awards because he's my little hero
22:53okay I'm here with Chuck and Chuck tell me the name of your dog again Gabe Gabe that's right
22:57okay now you were just telling me about um an award that he was already given can you explain
23:01to our audience about this one sure uh first and foremost before we give that award we definitely
23:05want to bring honor to the 2011 military working dog Bino who passed away this past year you know
23:11we're just so honored to be following in his past steps so awesome fantastic yeah thanks thank
23:18you all for your service uh Gabe after his deployment was selected as the in may of 2008
23:23was the american kennel club heroic dog of the year for the armed forces he had 26 finds of
23:28explosives in Iraq and how does that process work of you guys going out and finding explosives uh
23:35you know it's just you're trained to do it and uh you know the training is five months long it's
23:40pretty intense and then the dog is pretty much just working for an award you know and there's
23:45so many amazing dogs you know Gabe is just one of hundreds and hundreds of hero dogs because
23:52you know Gabe is deemed the hero dog for the military category but every single dog in
23:56Afghanistan right now is an equal hero Gabe's no he's not above any dog in the entire military
24:02uh so we're just here to represent them military dogs and how many dogs are over there right now
24:09uh you know I really can't say a number uh there's probably hundreds doing great things over there
24:14and when he's when he's doing this for him is it like a game it is he uh it's his for his tennis
24:20ball Gabe what's this say it's he loves his tennis ball and that's you know every dog may have a
24:25particular toy a kong uh so thank you to kong for giving them them gift baskets and uh the uh tennis
24:32balls and that's what Gabe loves is his tennis ball sweetheart and now he's retired right he's
24:38just living the good life he's retired gained about 25 pounds in retirement of course like all
24:42army guys do and uh he just lays on the couch and relaxes well Chuck and Gabe thank you both
24:48good luck thank you and thank you for your service thank all of Gabe's fans for voting
24:52so keep voting so if this is your pair don't forget to vote and Megan let's see what you got
24:57over in the zoom room oh I was cheering thanks Barry I am standing with supervising producer
25:06of the pet collective Michelle Davis Michelle what does it take to plan an event like this
25:14a lot of people and a lot of patience but we've been thrilled to be working with the zoom room
25:19and with the AHA on this because we think it's an amazing event and we're glad to be part of it
25:24now you know I watch the pet collective of course and I don't know have you guys ever
25:29done any live award shows like this no this is our first one and how we doing everyone pretty good
25:36so yeah no it's great so we hope this will be the first of many good good yeah me too no
25:43um tell everybody a little bit about the pet collective I know a lot of people are watching
25:47right now but maybe they've never been to this site before what what does it specialize in and
25:52what are sort of the good stories that come from the pet collective well the pet collective is
25:56really the go-to place on YouTube to find those kinds those stories that are going to make you
26:02feel happy make you feel uh enriched make you feel you know be entertained so what we do is we
26:09try to provide something for everyone and it's for pet lovers for pet owners and for pets themselves
26:15so check it out uh our YouTube channel the pet collective you'll find something there's something

26:41tell me a little bit about them I do I have two wonderful dogs I have a Boston Terrier named Pete
26:46who has been starring in many of our music parodies on our channel that you will love
26:51a dog named Izzy a pug named Izzy and then I have five cats as well so I'm a cat lover and a
26:57dog lover well they don't discriminate here at the pet collective Michelle thank you so
27:02much for being here and for hosting this amazing event bye my name is Alicia and deputy Kyle
27:12Coggerley was my husband and James was his canine partner my husband Kyle and James were part of a
27:17task force that were looking for a fugitive he was hiding in head-to-toe camouflage wooded area
27:24at night thankfully having Jinx along he gave up the suspect's location suspect did fire and hit
27:29my husband who unfortunately was killed on that mountain but because of Jinx the rest of the
27:35task force was saved even after that while they were still gunfire James tried to pull Kyle to
27:40safety and then another officer working on him also tried to pull the safety when Kyle was killed
27:46it took a lot of my my sense of safety and security I mean amongst the million other things
27:52that Kyle was to me so having Jinx still be here with me it it's the only thing that allows me to
27:59still have that sense of security and that piece of Kyle still with me you know Kyle didn't get to
28:05meet his daughter my daughter didn't get to meet her daddy who was supposed to be you know the
28:10person that protects her and now Jinx is people should vote for Jinx because he saved so many
28:16lives that night the people that were next to my husband when he fell have told me you know that
28:21him and Kyle are the only reasons that they got to go home to their families at night so not only
28:24did he save the entire task force but he also made sure that my husband wasn't alone at the end too
28:31and that to me makes him an absolute hero
28:35um all right I am here with Alicia and Jinx who is just all kinds of energy right now so this was
28:42your first time traveling together tell me how that's going it is he did great on the plane he
28:46had so much fun yeah it's been a very long day for him though so he has a lot of energy to work
28:51off has he been on the agility course yet no not yet nice he looks like he needs it so now what do
28:57what do you guys do uh what's what what does Jinx do for fun a dog that's done this much work and
29:02this many amazing things what does he do to relax well now he's retired so we have another dog at
29:07home that he plays with um he still goes out and trains he still goes out and trains with the guys
29:13and does bite work and agility and so basically working is playing to him okay and so he's still
29:18with that organization what's the name of the organization again he was with the Berks County
29:22Sheriff's Department he's retired now 30 29 and so now uh does he still have a lot of those
29:28qualities does he is he constantly looking for for work absolutely yes he still needs to go out
29:33and do that work and and uh you can tell if he doesn't get out for a few days or a few weeks
29:37how it's all pent up and he kind of goes crazy inside yeah and so what what what really helps
29:43in tiring him out and getting that energy actually having him go out and do some bite work with some
29:47of the other canine officers yeah that's the best way to tire him out how how often do you guys do
29:52that um they try and get him out at least once a month he still goes into the department a couple
29:56times a month and visits so are you are you volunteering to put a sleeve on for him to
30:01i guess i am in front of national youtube audience yeah i actually think that'd be
30:05really fun how how does that work what do we do um if you have a sleeve he just bites
30:11he just goes at it and you uh i think you go through it sometimes though they say
30:14yeah i've heard that you can still feel the pressure oh wow so does it actually break
30:18through or you can just feel the pressure clamping yes you just feel the pressure okay
30:23maybe i won't sign up for that bite clamping that's he's an amazing dog though and you guys
30:28are in tell me where where you are again where you're living we are in redding pennsylvania
30:33that's right another pennsylvanian like myself so i wish you guys the best of luck
30:37this is alicia and jinx nice to meet you as well thank you all right so don't forget to vote
30:43for alicia and jinx before midnight tonight
31:13so i am standing with christy schiller she is founder she she is founder and board chair of
31:26canine for cops christy tell us a little bit about what canine for cops is thanks megan canines for
31:34cops places police dogs in law enforcement agencies that budgets have been cut otherwise
31:41that they wouldn't be able to afford the luxury of having a dog so basically you're telling me
31:46that um well what kind of cities is it in tell us a little a couple cities that it's in well
31:51predominantly we've been in texas but we've also been in louisiana tennessee uh indiana iowa and
32:00dubuque iowa and tennessee louisiana and texas that's a lot right there that's that's a lot of
32:08states so you're looking for uh low income maybe cities that can't afford um that many personnel on
32:15their staff no not necessarily maybe that the the canine officer is trained and they've lost one in
32:21the line of duty he's been retired to old age some sinuating circumstances beyond their control that
32:28they can't afford to replace him right away that officer stays on desk duty until another until
32:34that is their partner for the remainder of their career so we provide them with a partner that's
32:40incredible you're you're providing best friends absolutely and i mean some of these they go on
32:46i mean the their entire career and that's that's their partner for life wow so i gotta ask you to
32:53um how does it feel to be a charity partner at the hero dog awards oh we are humbled and honored
33:00we have only been a non-profit of 501 c3 since march of 2011 so a little over a year we've placed
33:0930 dogs in that time and we could not be any more honored to be here what an incredible organization
33:18i feel the same and christy we want to thank you for being here tonight and we want to thank you
33:22for your uh outstanding um gift to the u.s right now and we hope that you're in many more cities
33:29to come thank you so much megan we love being here thank you thanks christy
33:39yes you gotta back it up
33:59so
34:29so
34:38all right guys i'm standing with jerry and sadie and these were the last year's winner
34:43for the law enforcement and arson dog jerry did you want to give a shout out i do i gotta say a
34:49shout out to zooks i know the owners of zooks are in the house so thank you so much for your
34:53great sponsorship and also and also quick shout out to the 2011 alumni that are in the house we
35:04lost four of those dogs last year sage benno harley roselle of course so take a moment of
35:15silence think about those great dogs that did great things thank you jerry you bet um
35:20um should we take that moment of silence after we do our little jelly all right we'll do that
35:27all right so what we're gonna do right now is uh sadie as an arson dog someone behind me has some
35:35arson on is a criminal what somebody behind me is a criminal and sadie's gonna find them and uh
35:41we're gonna hear about how sadie's gonna find them right and what she does when she finds them
35:45absolutely she's an accelerant detection dog so she looks for petroleum-based hydrocarbons and
35:50we're gonna find the arsonist behind us sadie's alert is passive so what she's gonna do when she
35:55has an alert is she's gonna sit on her bottom point with her nose so if there's a bad guy behind us
36:00she'll find them all right let's see it sadie
36:20oh no the criminal's getting away
36:29sadie go get that guy
36:33great job sadie we're getting rid of him he's going to jail
36:41hi my name is joe and my hero dog is daniel the miracle beagle daniel miraculously survived the
36:48gas chamber on october 4th of last year he and multiple other dogs were placed into a gas chamber
36:55in florence alabama when the door was open daniel was found wagging his tail and then he made his
37:03trek to new jersey where he became part of our family he's an extremely affable loving dog
37:10senator andy dinniman had the ball rolling on a bill to end the use of the gas chamber in the
37:17state of pennsylvania when he heard about daniel's story he was so motivated and moved that he
37:23called it daniel's law and we are at the final stages of hopefully getting it to the governor's
37:29desk where it will be signed into law daniel's law is important for a lot of reasons i think it's
37:35bringing a lot of awareness and education to our country that the gas chamber is used this much
37:42i can't tell you the number of animals lives he saved in the last year but i could tell you it's
37:48quite a lot you know we encourage you to cast their vote for daniel as the one who should win
37:54the overall award all right i am here with joe we are not with daniel today i don't know if you
38:02want to send a message from daniel to the viewers daniel loves everyone that's the best message i
38:07could say he's a extremely great personality so he sends his love to everyone and thanks everyone
38:13for their support especially for all of his causes which is for the more compassionate world for
38:18animals and people it's really an amazing story what what happened with him and how you're going
38:24forward how did you get started in the legal process of this of working with with government
38:29well it was thanks to senator andy dinniman from the state of pennsylvania he was the one who had
38:35a built-in process but decided that because of daniel's miracle story he would call it daniel's
38:41law and he's pursued it such under that name and it's now just one step away from being signed on
38:48the governor's desk so we're hoping that it carries a lot of momentum into other states because we
38:52still have 30 states in our country that use the gas chamber and it's a barbaric process and a
38:59terrible thing and we really want to make a more compassionate world and that's one way to start
39:05is to have a process if they do have to lose their lives not in such a hard way yeah absolutely
39:13and so do uh does daniel enjoy being this advocate can you tell that he has fun yeah i almost think
39:19he knows what he's doing maybe a little too much um but he really does and and you know as i say
39:24daniel stands on many stages uh obviously the first and most obvious is the gas chamber but
39:29it doesn't end there i mean we try to preach spay and neuter and how important that is
39:34we probably try to talk about adoptions we've been to multiple adoption events and most importantly
39:40we try to say that these animals should be treated as family members and daniel first and foremost is
39:45a member of our family and what he does is his secondary job if you know what i mean so but he
39:51loves it yeah absolutely well he sounds like a natural politician yeah i think he is i i in this
39:58election year you know where people are looking at what candidate's going to do most for our country
40:03well daniel has already done a lot by winning his category in emerging hero and we're thankful
40:07to everyone we're proud to be associated with such a wonderful group of dogs and we know that they'll
40:12all do great things for those animals in need amazing we'll vote for daniel for either the
40:16hero dog or for the president of the united states this is joe daniel is at home not feeling well
40:23make sure to vote before midnight tonight thank you so much and good luck thank you pleasure
40:27hi my name is my entire guide dog tabitha has been nominated for hero dog of the year
40:38in the guide dog category well i got cabi in 2004 for leader dogs for the blind i got her after i
40:45started using my site and uh what cabi did for me was you know the obvious help me get around
40:54me and guide me but uh she was much more than that when i got diagnosed
41:00with glaucoma that i knew that i was losing my sight i i went into a state of depression for
41:09a little bit as anybody would i realized that uh i don't know was the dog able to help me navigate
41:18maybe why i couldn't find things but she also defiled me again because in my state of losing
41:27my sight not knowing what to do i kind of lost my personality a little bit my my sense of self
41:34and uh didn't realize it until i got cabi and realized how much of life i've been missing
41:42she loved to work she loved to do her job she was placed with me to do you know she
41:49let me through the darkness right she got me through the darkness where nothing else or no
41:54one else could all right i am here with ann and driver tabitha is actually at home right now she
42:04is retired she is lounging away and so how does how does tabitha feel about being replaced now
42:10by driver uh tabitha is okay with it she was ready to retire she worked for me for about seven
42:15years and um it was time it was time yeah it was time to retire and can you tell me a little more
42:22about how that relationship works between you two if there's is there a real sort of soul connection
42:26that you feel extremely i mean with tabitha and i and and with my new dog driver um we had
42:34an extremely close bond an extremely close relationship um you know we have to become
42:41an awesome working team together um they have to know what i'm thinking i have to know what
42:46they're thinking and it gets interpreted through the harness believe it or not um i can sense what
42:51the dog is feeling they sense what i'm feeling and because of that um we're able to navigate
42:57through life safely without getting hit by a car or anything else it comes my way right
43:02yeah so it's really a strong bond and um tabitha was one that uh the bond was incredible just
43:10incredible yeah and so now do tabitha and driver get along or they they pals they get along great
43:17no competition they get along great okay and now how have you felt a difference in uh in bond with
43:23driver well driver and i have only been together since february of this year so we're still
43:28becoming a good working team um it takes about six months to a year to become a good working team
43:34for the leader dog and i so we're still working on it but he
43:38he's a joyful noise he's a good boy yeah and what do you guys do to relax what do you do for fun
43:45play a lot of tuggy and uh you know as a leader dog even when he's not working he's limited on
43:51how much he can play because that could affect their distraction when they are working so play
43:56is very limited so that's why retirement is awesome for tabby right now retirement sounds
44:02wonderful all right well ann thank you very much ann and tabitha with her proxy driver make sure if
44:08they are your favorites to vote for them and now megan let's see what you've got over in the madness
44:14i'll tell you what i got barry i got twitter blowing up on me i'm going to read you some
44:20things that people are saying about hero dogs this is from at this is fun 2009 she says or he
44:25says my dog is a hero because he brings me joy every single day of my life wowza uh let's see i
44:32got at sydney t4 15 saying i think all dogs are heroes they save us more than we do them that's
44:38true i've got at carla italia saying every day is every dog is a hero but my winston is a hero
44:45because he knows how to cheer me up when no one else can and finally i've got at christy to saying
44:51my dog ivan once warned me of a fire in my kitchen true hero dog yeah well seems like that's
44:57going around kitchen fires yikes so we got a couple more hero dog hopefuls coming up guys
45:04we've got um yogi no i'm sorry i already said that one which one we got oh we've got the um
45:10chick magnet dog jacqueline can't wait to see what that dog is a hero for and we've got reggie
45:17the superhero dog let's check them out and see why they are going to be nice next year's hero dog
45:28hi my name's john and this is my dog jacqueline and i would like to nominate her for the 2012
45:36hero service dog award i met jacqueline at a shelter where i rescued her well she kind of
45:44rescued me i still have issues talking to ladies but jacqueline breaks the ice
45:52because they just talk to jacqueline and then by default they have to talk to me
45:58i have two dates with real women i i usually just say oh yeah i'm going on a date and then it's just
46:04i'm eating with my mom up in her kitchen because i live in her basement i have one date with this
46:10girl ally then i have another date following ally's date don't tell ally that would never happen
46:19ever jacqueline's my hero she saved me from loneliness she saved me from my mom's basement
46:28well still in there still smells terrible but i hang out with jacqueline in my mom's basement
46:35she's a chick magnet she's more of a hero than the green lantern or the flash or harry potter even
46:44well maybe not harry potter
46:50my name is greg i would like to nominate my dog reggie for the hero dog awards
46:55hero dog awards my dog's a superhero plain and simple no literally i mean he flies
47:04it's got eye lasers he saves the world on a regular basis it's a hero dog awards superhero dog
47:12no-brainer other dogs are off like chasing sticks and frisbees and stuff like that
47:17reggie's fighting crime okay like aliens uh monsters mole people tidal waves uh just general evil
47:32i mean i i would like to think that i'm like his sidekick because i feed him i walk him you know
47:37give him water i give him belly rubs stuff like that basic sidekick stuff so i'm like almost a
47:42superhero too i don't have a costume like him though basically his costume is just a cape
47:47that's it he's still a good dog even after saving all these people and fighting all this crime he
47:52still comes home and he's like you know just a regular good dog just a dog doing his thing you
47:57know and saving the world i don't know what else you need from me because this is clearly the
48:04winner i mean it's called the hero dog awards he's a superhero he's not just man's best friend
48:10he's mankind's best friend and that's why reggie should win the hero dog awards
48:16yeah you're welcome by the way you're welcome
48:21here with jamie van why she is ceo of the zoom room hollywood and we want to give a shout out
48:29we want to say thank you again to her for hosting this event and also
48:32cruvin dog wines for sponsoring us and uh jamie who are we got here this is lola she is seven
48:39months old and she has very little training so we'll see how this goes because what we're gonna
48:44see next is how zoom room hollywood has uh has their dogs go through this agility course and
48:49tell us a little bit about these pieces um so this is called a tire jump and basically the
48:54dog has to go through the tire there's 10 ways to cheat and only one way to go through correctly so
48:58we're gonna hope she's gonna go through it um this piece behind us is called the a-frame
49:03and basically the dog has to run up that side and down the other side and hit the orange part
49:08yeah all right so are you guys ready to see some agility all right lola let's see it
49:32great job lola i don't know if uh
49:35i don't know if if you could do any of this without treats it seems yes it's a big part of
49:41our training philosophy so we think dogs really like treats and you know they tend to follow them
49:46around now tell us uh jamie i was talking to laura earlier and she said that the zoom room came as a
49:53spark of an idea in 2003 but it didn't get started till 2007 tell me about that yeah actually um as
49:59a dog trainer i kept trying to refer people to places where they could do this kind of thing
50:02and there wasn't any place where they could you know hang out with their dog do some agility
50:06classes learn some tricks so that's sort of how it came about now is there um something that
50:11everyday dogs can do at home for agility yeah there's lots of things i mean you can set up a
50:17you know broomstick in your own house and have your dog go over those so there's all kinds of
50:20things parks offer opportunities for agility and just you know use your imagination so um
50:27is lola your dog or she's here for the night she's here for the night we gotta thank lola
50:33can i get a round of applause for lola she's doing so good for a seven month old puppy i
50:38gotta say and she's huge what kind of dog is she she's a bernice mountain dog what is that
50:44it's actually a working dog that um they were originally designed to pull carts so yeah she
50:50doesn't have a cart to pull but she's hanging out and having some fun so i got a question what kind
50:54of dogs are bad like i've heard that a lot of dogs um if they work if they're working dogs
51:00they they feel like they have a sense of purpose can you talk a little bit about that and why
51:04you know zoom room is so important for owners and dogs yeah basically dogs that are designed to work
51:09like this dog they're designed to work all day so when you put them in an apartment or a home
51:14or a backyard they tend to find other jobs that you might not like so much like dismantling your
51:19house or rearranging your furniture so um having them interact and do some physical activity and
51:24get some direction is really fantastic for them and it tends to cut down on a lot of behavior
51:28problems i'm i'm remodeling my house soon and i'm very worried that i'm gonna get a lot of torn
51:35apart floors that's happened um i gotta ask you now um we've heard there's 12 locations is that
51:42right yes we just opened our 12th location in encinitas california and we have another about 30
51:47coming coming along in very 30 yes in other parts of the country so and i've read that that zoom
51:53room hollywood is aggers zoom room is actually something that's never been out there before
51:57why is it so different we are the only brick and mortar dog training franchise actually in the
52:02nation so uh we incorporate training and social aspects of dog ownership as well as retail um as
52:08so yeah that's that's what we do that's great um well i want to thank you so much for hosting this
52:14event and and letting us use your space i'm sure that there's going to be a lot of dogs that leave
52:18here with some fun toys it looks like it's our pleasure completely thank you so much jamie and
52:24let's give her another hand uh for lola here hi i'm marissa and hi i'm stella and stella is my
52:34hero dog i got stella after i lost my dad and my best friend and my first dog all within a matter
52:42of months and needed like unconditional love from someone something and sort of stella was there
52:48this complete stranger walked up to me at the dog park one day and said you know your dog is
52:51absolutely exceptional but she sort of insisted and said you should really make her a therapy dog
52:57in july of 2011 she was uh tested to become a therapy dog uh did it as a complete joke she
53:04breezed through the evaluation and uh sort of we haven't looked back since i figure if stella was
53:08able to cheer me up she can cheer everyone else up too stella volunteers at a couple different
53:12places one of them is uh with the developmentally disabled most of whom are non-verbal she also
53:18volunteers with a child bereavement group at gilda's club as these kids have lost a parent to
53:22cancer she gets hugged and she gets carried around and you know they have a grand old time with her
53:27when stella and i visit uh the hospitals or nursing homes or these group homes uh we give out these
53:33chapsticks and sweaters and sweatshirts and such and it always brings about a smile in the patient
53:37i think that stella is a hero dog because she is just the most unconditionally loving puppy there
53:42is no fear of anyone there is no you know you have an illness or you have a disability i don't want
53:47to be near you she just no matter what she just she loves you the second she meets you
53:55okay i am here with marissa and stella the amazing therapy dog um so tell me about what you guys do
54:02when you go into some of these places uh stella goes in she gives people hugs she gives them love
54:07she encourages them to hold them on her lap and pet her and things of that sort yeah that's amazing
54:13and and how often do you guys go and do this uh five or six days a week oh wow yeah it's often
54:20it's often yes we are we keep busy and is is it play for her uh i think yeah she enjoys it she
54:26has fun with it you know she's like oh extra attention and extra love why not yeah that's
54:30amazing what do you guys do what do you guys do to unwind when you're not given the therapy uh
54:34she has a baby puppy at home not her puppy but there's a baby puppy at home that drives her
54:38crazy and definitely burns off her energy yeah wrestling yes they do yes they do he's four and
54:43a half months old oh nice yeah and and now i i hear there was a an extra special um ability she
54:50has that you wanted to show our viewers yes there is okay would you like to hug her or me uh sure
54:54give it give it to me let's see what happens i'm getting the royal dog hug from stella here
54:59one arm in each armpit just pick her up okay one arm in each sure
55:05oh there it is there it is stella the dog hugger
55:10wow that's that's amazing and should i just keep her like this now for the rest of it okay i got a
55:16therapy dog so oh wow and so this is what she does this is how you guys that's how she cheers people
55:22up you can't you can't say no to a hugging dog i would i would never say no to this it's just
55:27it's this this brown warmth that's i don't know if that's the best way of describing it but
55:32that's what it feels like that it is and so what do you guys have planned for the rest of the
55:37weekend uh hero dog award ceremony tomorrow night and flying home sunday okay it's a quick one it is
55:43it is and do you have some a lot of sessions set up for this week um yeah i actually cancel some
55:48to come out here shame on me but uh we have monday's our day off but otherwise we go right
55:52back okay well good luck to you marissa and stella so make sure if you want them to win
55:58vote for them if you want to dog hug yourself you're going to have to show up

56:26my own name they tell me the carpet is green but since i'm colorblind
56:33i'm sure if it is they should put some ground on the floors here so that the
56:39dogs can go to the bathroom oh this smells
56:45hey watch your step
56:48take it easy look down here i'm walking here i'm walking here
56:55i'm the farthest thing from a hero pretty much the most heroic thing i've done is
57:02and once barked at the mailman
57:04and uh when he knocked on the door
57:10it's a good
57:13uh but that dog has might go uh
57:19and then uh you know maybe bark at him a little bit
