FULL, UNABRIDGED VIDEO: http://bit.ly/1vQIix8

Animal abuse or time-honored religious practice?

This video of a messy camel slaughter on a street in Pakistan is tough to watch. What is the meaning of this, you ask? The men performing the botched killing are 'sacrificing' the animal to their deity, and for them it’s the most important part of the Islamic holiday, Eid al-Adha.

The video was filmed on October 6, according to the person who uploaded it to Liveleak this week.

Some context: Eid al-Adha, which translates to the Festival (or feast) of Sacrifice, is the second most important festival in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the moment Allah visited the prophet Ibrahim in a dream and commanded him to sacrifice his son Isma'il as an act of obedience and fealty. Allah cut Ibrahim a break and allowed him to sacrifice a lamb instead.

The modern tradition involves the ritual killing of an animal, usually a sheep, a goat, or in this case a camel, by cutting its throat.

Meat from the slaughtered beast is generally shared three ways. One third goes to the killer and his family, one third is given to relatives and neighbors, and the remaining third is gifted to the poor.
