Hong Kong Occupy Central Movement turns violent after alleged triad involvement in anti-protest mob
  • 9 years ago
Hong Kong’s Occupy Central movement, also known as the umbrella movement, turned violent again over the hectic weekend, after a mob of counter-protesters attempted to gain access to a rally site.

When anti-Occupy demonstrators strove to remove the protesters’ barricades, violence erupted as the two sides engaged in fierce scuffles. Although 19 people were later arrested, the police have been accused of being slow to react to the incident.

Around Sunday midnight, Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, whose media group includes this animated news site and who is a strong supporter of the movement, visited the site. He urged the protesters to keep calm despite provocations from the mob, which many allege included triad members.
