A massive explosion on Thursday ripped through the city of Ludwigshafen in southern Germany, killing a construction worker and injuring at least ten other people.

The fatal accident took place at a construction site shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The site was close to rows of houses and a chemical factory.

Gas company GASCADE confirmed that the explosion occurred when a defective high-pressure gas pipe was exposed, German newspaper BILD reported.

Houses within 300 metres of the construction site were struck by the blast. Flames as high as 200 metres shot in the air and the area was blanketed by billows of smoke.

The glass of numerous surrounding houses were shattered, while the heat caused the license plates of vehicles parked in the area to melt.
