Kobani: Iraqi Kurd peshmerga forces pass through Turkey to join fight against IS

Iraqi peshmerga fighters are expected to join the battle against Islamic State in the Syrian town of Kobani on Wednesday after Turkey allowed them to enter its territory.

About 150 Iraqi peshmerga fighters have been sent to Kobani, with half going by air and half by land, BBC reported. Those going by air would fly into Sanliurfa from Erbil and drive to Kobani from there, according to the Guardian.

The remaining fighters would accompany a convoy of 80 vehicles carrying weapons including artillery pieces, rocket launchers and heavy machine guns. They would enter Turkey through the Habur border and then follow the main road along the Turkish Syrian border to Suruç and Kobani, the Guardian reported.

Kobani has been besieged by Islamic State for more than a month. The IS has threatened to massacre the defenders of the town which has led to almost 200,000 Syrian Kurds fleeing to neighbouring Turkey, Reuters reported.
