South African police hunt Senzo Meyiwa killers: no evidence suggests it was a hit

South African police have said there is no evidence that the murder of Senzo Meyiwa was an organised hit, and they have set up a taskforce to investigate the killing.

South African police said there were seven people inside the house of Mayiwe’s girlfriend at the time of the shooting, News24 reported.

Senzo Meyiwa and his friends reportedly bumped into the two attackers near the door as they were leaving the house, reported by News24. A scuffle ensued during which the attackers demanded cellphones and valuables. One of the attackers then opened fire once with a .38 caliber revolver.

Two more shots were fired randomly outside the house. A total of three attackers then fled the scene with a stolen cellphone, Citizen reported.

Earlier reports said that Meyiwa had died while protecting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo from the attackers. However, South African police said Meyiwa was not protecting any specific person at the time of the shooting, according to News24.
