A man was killed on Saturday when a freight train ran him down on a bridge spanning the James River, near Lynchburg, Virginia.
The dead man, Jon Gregoire, 21, and a group of friends approached the track around 4.20 p.m., national media reported.
It’s not known how many of their group walked onto the bridge, but Gregoire and at least one other person, 21-year-old Victoria Bridges, mounted the narrow trestle.
At some point during their walk, a northbound freight train appeared, trapping them. It is understood Bridges jumped for her life, but Gregoire was too slow. The train’s conductor reported hearing a thud as the vehicle struck him.
Bridges landed heavily on the terrain, roughly 100 feet below the bridge, but survived. She was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Gregoire, who apparently held strong religious convictions, left this quote from fundamentalist Christian theologian William Lane Craig in his final Facebook update, “If life ends at the grave, then we have no ultimate purpose for living.”
