Free internet! New York to replace payphones with high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots

New York City aims to replace its aging public payphones with 10,000 high-speed free WiFi hotspots as part of a plan called LinkNYC.

The new Wi-Fi kiosks will double as charging stations, where users can also access city services and interactive maps and dial 911, the city's 311 help line and make free domestic calls.

The service will be 20 times faster than the city’s average home internet speeds and is expected to generate $500 million in advertising revenue for the city in 12 years.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office issued a request for proposals earlier this year and awarded the project to CityBridge, a consortium of companies including Qualcomm and Titan.

The first LinkNYC will be rolled out by the end of 2015. Plans call for 10,000 kiosks to be installed throughout the city.
