A newborn baby survived for six days after being dumped at the bottom of a stormwater drain in Sydney.

Police believe the baby was born last Monday and was dumped in the drain on Tuesday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. The 2.4-meter deep drain is off the M7 Motorway in Quakers Hill, according to the Australian.

Cyclists David and Haley Otte were cycling past the drain on Sunday morning when two men told them about an unusual noise coming from the drain, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. They quickly contacted police.

It took three men and three police officers to lift the 200 kg cover off the drain. Two officers then climbed into the drain and found the baby.

The baby was taken to hospital and is in a serious but stable condition. Police have charged the baby’s mother with attempted murder, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
