A young man at a gas station in Nebraska attempted an array of different ways to kill himself Tuesday morning before dawn.

Matthew Luedeman, 27, pulled into what looked like a routine visit at a Cenex gas station quickly turned chaotic.

He was wearing nothing but a pair of jeans in the cold, when he drenched himself in gasoline.

Police Chief Bruce Lang said, “He took the gas nozzle, turned the gas pump on, held the nozzle above his head and poured gasoline on himself.”

Lighting himself on fire, and engulfed in flames for 10 seconds he attempted to pour more gasoline on himself.

That’s when the gas station clerk saw the 27-year-old’s irrational behavior and quickly shut off all the gas pumps.

Luedeman walked into the gas station and chased out the clerk, s she called authorities.

He grabbed a pair of scissors and cut down his forearm vertically about 18 inches.

When that did not work, he took an ice scraper and attempted to cut his carotid artery in his neck on the right side.

Lang arrived in time and used a taser to stop Luedeman from committing suicide.

He was rushed to a Lincoln hospital where he is alive, but in critical condition.

Beatrice police are still investigating why the young man tried to kill himself.
