Attack on Furry convention 2014? Furry event interrupted by chlorine gas poisoning

Thousands of people were evacuated from the Hyatt Rosemont in Chicago early on Sunday after a chlorine gas incident made people ill. Among them were many animal costume-clad people who were attending this year’s Midwest FurFest convention. According to police, 19 people were sent to hospitals.
According to the Midwest FurFest website, the convention that was taking place that evening involved art, literature and performances based on anthropomorphic animals.
The Rosemont Public Safety Department said in a statement that the incident took place at around 12:40 a.m. First responders who were called to the scene detected a noxious odor that was spreading through the ninth floor of the hotel. Officials determined that the smell was due to a high level of chlorine gas in the air.
Those who were affected complained of nausea and dizziness, among other symptoms.
Detectives later determined the incident appeared to be “an intentional act,” as hazardous material technicians discovered the smell was emanating from powdered chlorine that had been left in the ninth floor stairwell. A Rosemont Public Safety Department statement said officials were treating the incident as a criminal matter.
The entire building was evacuated after the chlorine poisoning incident. Those who weren’t hospitalized were asked to stay at nearby accommodations.
