Shipwreck caught on tape: Volvo Ocean Race crew rescued in shark-infested waters

The Mauritius coast guard have rescued the crew of the Vestas Wind in the Volvo Ocean Race after their vessel crashed into a remote coral reef in the Indian Ocean.

The Danish team were competing in the second stage, which runs from Cape town to Abu Dhabi. Traveling at 19 knots, or 35 kilometers per hour, the 65-foot yacht smacked into coral rock and spun 180 degrees until coming to a halt, breaking both rudders and the vessel’s stern.

An on-board camera captured the moment the vessel crashed in the shark-inhabited waters.

The nine-member crew remained aboard for several hours into the night, but were forced to abandon ship after the stern began taking on water. They waded through knee-deep water to a dry section on the reef and waited for the coast guard to arrive.

The coast guard arrived on Tuesday and took the crew to a deserted island. Another fishing vessel completed the rescue mission on Wednesday and transported the team to Mauritius.

The nine-month competition started in October in Spain, with seven teams visiting six continents. They are expected to finish the race in Sweden in June.

The Australian skipper, Chris Nicholson, accepted responsibility for the wreck and said he hoped the team could rejoin the next stage of the race in January once repairs are made.
