Flu outbreak this year declared an epidemic, H3N2 is particularly deadly to children and the elderly

Dr. Pritish Tosh, an infectious diseases physician with the Mayo Clinic and a member of the Mayo vaccine research group, says this year’s strain of flu is especially dangerous, according to a report by ABC News.

About 90 percent of flu cases so far this year have been the H3N2 subtype, according to an ABC News report citing the Centers for Disease Control.

According to Tosh, the H3N2 flu virus and can quickly become a life-threatening condition in children.

“The virus can enter the bloodstream and then the brain, creating severe respiratory symptoms including shortness of breath and a very high fever,” he was quoted as saying. Tosh added that even in healthy children, the body can overcompensate and send white blood cells flooding into the lungs. This in turn can cause the body to react too vigorously that would cause as much damage as the virus itself.

Tosh said that H3 subtypes of influenza tend to lead to the largest number of hospitalizations and deaths, particularly for children, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system.

Furthermore, this year’s influenza strain is not well-matched to what was predicted by the surveillance community, so the current vaccine available is not a great match to combat the virus, Tosh said.

“Some would speculate that this means the vaccine won’t work as well, but that has not been proven,” ABC News reported Tosh as saying. “You should still get your flu shot because it’s the best protection we have.”
