A video of a forest guard in India being mauled to death by a wild bear is making the rounds online.
The animal attack took place in Surajpur, Chhattisgarh on December 21, according to NDTV, and the entire thing is filmed on someone’s mobile phone.
NDTV reports that the female bear spent several hours ransacking homes, even killing a person, on Dec. 20 after wandering into a local village. Villagers alerted the local forest department, which sent officials to try to chase away the bear, but one guard, identified as KP Singh, was attacked by the bear and ultimately killed.
"People started to think that the bear was mentally ill. It had attacked the guard and some animals earlier. We had earlier tried to trap it also, but we weren't successful in it," said Kailash Chadra Bebarta, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, according to NDTV.
The animal was later shot dead by members of the forest department and the local police, NDTV reported.
