Shark attacks on Internet cables may be to blame for bad connection in Vietnam

On Monday morning, a major fiber-optic cable in Southeast Asia ruptured, severing a proportion of Vietnam’s internet connection along with it.
The fiber-optic cable, called the Asia Gateway Pacific, or AAG, provides communications between North America and Southeast Asia. The rupture occurred on section S1H, the section of the AAG that connects Vietnam with Hong Kong.
The fracture has slowed the cable’s ability to transfer information via its optical fibers. Because of the location of the fracture, and because AAG provides a significant portion of Vietnam’s internet capabilities, Vietnam is now experiencing issues with internet connectivity. AAG’s operators are currently working to find the fracture location so that they can weld the pieces back together.
Fiber-optic cables, also known as submarine communications cables, run along the ocean and carry information worldwide via glass optical fibers.
Optical fibers are made out of glass and transfer data by continuously reflecting laser light. Optical fibers are insulated by numerous surrounding layers, including a wall of copper and a nylon yard bedding. More recent cables sometimes also include Kevlar, a strong, synthetic fiber, as an outer layer.
Although optical fibers are well protected and insulated, they are still vulnerable to many hazards at sea. If cables are placed on faultlines, they are at risk of damage from earthquakes. Other risks include dredging and sharks, who are able to sense the cables’ electromagnetic fields through sensors near their nose called ampullae of Lorenzini. These sensors can detect the cables’ high-voltage, which resembles the signal of distressed fish.
In response to these threats, companies like Google, which has invested in thousands of miles of cable across the world, are choosing to further reinforce their cable in order to prevent experiences like Vietnam’s.
