Bear mauling: Florida woman gets mauled after sticking hand in cage
  • 9 years ago
A 50-year old woman visiting this wildlife sanctuary in Dade City, Florida was badly injured following a really boneheaded move.

Virginia Riggs was at the wildlife shelter on other business, with sanctuary owner Mary Arche escorting her around the grounds. The two stopped in front of a pen that held a Florida black bear named Abner, who has been at the center for about a year and a half.

Arche stepped away to handle business elsewhere in the compound, leaving Riggs alone next to Abner's cage. That's when she thought it'd be a good idea to try and touch the bear ... However, all Abner saw was a juicy cut of meat for the taking.

Less than a minute later, Arche was able to free Riggs from the bear's jaws.

Riggs was transported to the hospital in serious condition but is expected to recover from her injuries.

As for Abner the Bear, since the compound isn't open to the public and the accident is the fault of the visitor, it's likely that he'll stay put in the wildlife reserve, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials.
