UK may be the first country to allow three-parent babies

The British Parliament may approve a fertilization procedure that combines the DNA of three different people to prevent mothers with mitochondrial disorders from passing often-deadly diseases to their children.

Sometimes called mitochondrial manipulation, or nuclear genome transfer, the fertility technique was first developed at Newcastle University. The treatment uses two different methods to substitute a mother’s abnormal mitochondria with a donor’s healthy mitochondria so that children do not inherit mitochondrial disorders from their mothers. One treatment method incorporates a mother’s nucleus into a donor’s egg, while the other method combines the DNA of the parents with a donor’s healthy mitochondria.

If Parliament votes yes on the legislation on Tuesday, the UK will become the first country in the world to legalize the controversial fertility treatment.

The benefits of approving the treatment are plentiful, as one in 6,500 children are currently born with a mitochondrial disorder. Mitochondrial diseases are usually incurable and include disorders such as muscular dystrophy and various neurological disorders. However, research on mitochondrial DNA has been limited and some scientists and members of parliament, particularly those connected to the Church of England, remain wary of approving the fertility treatment so soon.
