Taiwan TransAsia crash: Death toll rises to 26 as engine flameout suspected

Engine flameout has been cited as a possible cause of deadly Wednesday air crash in Taiwan when a TransAsia Airways plane crashed killing at least 25 people.

The TransAsia ATR-72-600 turboprop aircraft was flying with 58 people onboard from Taipei Songshan Airport to the island of Kinmen on Wednesday, local media reported.

Air traffic control recordings show that the plane was cleared for takeoff at 10:52 a.m. The pilot sent out a distress call reporting engine flameout at 10:54 a.m. Seconds later the plane clipped a bridge and hit a taxi before ploughing into the Keelung River.

At least 22 people were killed and 22 are still missing.

This is the second TransAsia plane crash in seven months. In July last year, 48 people were killed when TransAsia flight GE222 crashed in Taiwan’s outlying island of Penghu.
