‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle told a friend his killer was ‘nuts’ before he was shot

Former Marine Eddie Ray Routh, 27, is being tried for the 2013 murder of “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, 38, and the murder of another veteran, Chad Littlefield, 35, at a shooting range in Texas.

After stints in Iraq and Haiti, Routh developed symptoms suggesting he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. On January 19, 2013, the Green Oaks Psychiatric Hospital suggested that Routh may pose a danger to the public. However, it then released him on January 25 with eight different medications to combat his various mental issues, which included depression, mania and severe nightmares.

Almost a week later on February 2, Kyle and Littlefield took Routh to an outdoor shooting range southwest of Glen Rose, Texas. Both men, as fellow veterans themselves, had agreed to mentor Routh and help him combat his post-traumatic stress disorder. Earlier that morning, Routh had been drinking whisky and smoking marijuana at his home. He had also threatened his girlfriend with a knife.

On the drive towards Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, both Kyle and Littlefield became wary of their backseat passenger’s strange behavior. Kyle texted Littlefield, saying, “This dude is straight up nuts.” Littlefield sent a text back and said, “He’s right behind me. Watch my six [watch my back].”

At the shooting range, Routh used a .45-caliber pistol to shoot Kyle five times in the back and once in the head. He used Kyle’s Navy-issued Sig Sauer pistol to shoot Littlefield four times in the back and once in the face and head. Routh then fled the scene in Kyle’s Ford-350 pickup truck with the guns.

The case is currently being tried in Stephenville, Texas.
