Teen encouraged to commit suicide: Girl charged with manslaughter for urging friend to kill himself
  • 9 years ago
The family of a young man who committed suicide in July is pressing charges against his girlfriend for reportedly influencing his decision.

Michelle Carter, 18, is being charged with involuntary manslaughter. She could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty, according to My Fox Boston.

Conrad Roy III was found inside his idling truck in the parking lot of a Kmart in Fairhaven, Massachusetts in July. A gas generator was found inside his truck as well, and the cause of his death was carbon monoxide, reports Fox.

According to court documents, Roy got out of his truck at one point and texted Carter that he couldn’t go through with it.

“Get back in,” Carter allegedly texted back.

Following his death, Carter posted multiple messages to social media sites, stating she missed Roy.

“Such a beautiful gone too soon,” she wrote in a tweet. “I’ll always remember your bright light and smile. You’ll be forever in my heart, I love you Conrad.”

Carter also helped organize a softball tournament to raise money for suicide awareness in September.

Her family released the following statement about the charges:

“Our hearts have and remain broken for the Roy family. For everyone that does not know our daughter, she is not the villain the media is portraying her to be. She is a quiet, kind and sympathetic young girl. She tried immensely to help Mr. Roy in his battle with depression. We know that once all of the facts are released, our daughter will be found innocent.”

Carter is currently out on bail and is due in court in April. She was charged as a youthful offender, meaning she could face punishment as an adult if the court convicts her.
