Wrong-way driver hits several vehicles in multi-car crash on Route 1 in Middletown, Pennsylvania

Two accidents involving multiple vehicles on Route 1 in Middletown, Pennsylvania Sunday night left 12 people injured.

The first accident occurred at around 6 p.m. on Route 1 near Hill Road when a pickup truck careened off the highway and smashed head-on into a tree. Two adults and four children were injured.

"They were lucky considering the impact that they had with the tree and that it was to the front [of the truck] and not to the side," Chief Frank Farry of Langhorne-Middletown Fire Co. told the The Intelligencer.

The second accident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. and involved a driver who was driving southbound in the northbound lanes on Route 1 near Interstate 95.

The vehicle struck several other vehicles. Some were sideswiped, while others were hit head-on. Six people out of the seven involved were injured, with the wrong-way driver suffering the most severe injuries.

Police suspect the driver was driving under the influence but have not yet confirm this.

All of those injured were transported to St. Mary Medical Center. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. Both directions on Route 1 were closed as police investigated the scene. The highway was reopened later.
