Police officer shot twice during routine traffic stop in Long Island, New York

Officer Mark Collins was shot twice during a routine traffic stop in Long Island by an armed suspect who fled from a traffic stop inspection just before midnight on Wednesday.

The plainclothes Suffolk County police officer, along with two other police officers, carried out a routine traffic stop on a 1992 Honda Accord with four occupants.

The suspect bolted from the car when Collins and the other officers approached. Collins chased after the suspect and was shot twice. Once in the neck, and once in the hip.

The suspect was arrested an hour later nearby while the other occupants of the car were being questioned.

Collins was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital by police helicopter and is in serious but stable condition. He will remain in a medically-induced coma in the intensive care unit.
