A Taiwanese female university student who pressed charges against one of her classmates for sexual molestation apparently won’t find justice thanks to a backwards legal loophole.
During a graduation trip to the Philippines the unidentified student returned drunk to her hotel room one night. That’s when the accused allegedly followed her and got into bed with her, kissing and touching her.
The female student waited until she’d returned to Taiwan to press for an apology. She exchanged messages with the groper, who apologized and admitted he’d been wrong and took those texts to the authorities.
Unfortunately, Taiwan lacks the jurisdiction to pursue crimes that aren’t felonies outside the island nation. The country may pursue violent crimes or drug smuggling if they involve Taiwanese citizens, but apparently sexual molestation does not qualify.
While local police say it’s good that the male student has expressed remorse for his actions, they will not be pursuing the case any further.
