Chile Marijuana- First legal crop for medicinal use BITE (Spanish) Ana Maria Gazmuri, President of Daya Foundation:
A Chilean municipality is harvesting legal medical marijuana as part of a government-approved pilot programme aimed at helping ease the pain of cancer patients. The harvest on Tuesday came after the country’s first planting of cannabis for medical uses in October 2014. It is the work of a municipality in the capital of Santiago and by the Daya Foundation, a non-profit group that sponsors pain-relieving therapies. The head of foundation said on Tuesday that Chile “has the opportunity to become a regional leader” in the production of medical cannabis. Planting, selling and transporting marijuana is usually illegal in Chile and carries prison terms of up to 15 years. The law, however, allows medical use of marijuana with the authorisation of several ministries.
