Rats Can Recognize Other Rats’ Emotional Expressions

In a recent study, researchers have found that rats avoided pictures of other rats who appear to be in pain, indicating that they can visually recognize emotional expressions among their species.

Rats may use emotional expression as a way to communicate.

In a recent study, scientists have found that the rodents avoided pictures of other rats displaying body language that could be interpreted as being in pain.

Changes in the body to reflect this negative state include tightened areas in the eyes and face, flattened ears, swollen nose and cheeks, and shifted whiskers.

As part of the experiment, researchers took photos of the same species of rat with a neutral expression and then photos of them with a pained expression.
