- Professionals who would mourn for money were employed in ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and among the Aztecs, Romans, Syrians and Persians and in African cultures. These mourners were hired by the owner of the house where the deceased live or by the people planning the funeral. Long weeping rituals were held during Aztec mourning ceremonies. When an important person died in Egypt the women of the household would smear mud over their heads and faces. Then they would wrap their clothes round their bodies and beat their exposed breasts as they walked around. The head of the household would hire mourners for money. Among the ancient Jews, if the deceased was an ordinary person he would be mourned for a week. If he was a leading figure or an artist the mourning would last for a month.
