The Life And Times Of Hugh Catchpole is a simple, touching documentary that traces the life of an Englishman who gave seventy years of his life imparting education to students in Pakistan. It traces his life through the words and memories of his students, who are now quite aged themselves.

And what a group of students he had. Had Mr. Catchpole been alive today, he would have been proud of his achievement. He passed away in 1997. His students are spread across three nations: Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. And many of them reached the highest positions of service to their nations. In Bangladesh and India, some of them held top civil and military positions. And in Pakistan, the number two and three men in the Pakistani armed forces were students of Mr. Catchpole.

The year 2007 marks the centenary of Hugh Catchpole’s birth. He came to India in 1928. He died at the age of 90 in Islamabad, Pakistan. This year, President General Pervez Musharraf conferred on Mr. Catchpole’s nephew Pakistan’s highest civilian medal, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, the government has also issued commemorative stamps.

This Englishman touched the lives of many Pakistanis. And this documentary is our way of remembering his fine legacy.
