10:23OK.
10:33The young man, Lonnie White, the navigator of the White Star
10:36is waiting outside.
10:38Well, have him come right in.
10:46How are you, White?
10:48Mr. Granger?
10:49Want to see me?
10:50Yes, bring up the chair.
10:52Sit down.
10:53I want to talk to you a minute.
10:56Well, did you have a good trip, White?
10:58Yes, sir.
11:00Nice run of skipjack and a few tuna.
11:02Fine.
11:05We're transferring Captain Meglin out of the White Star.
11:08A darn fine skipper, sir.
11:10Oh, yes.
11:11We're giving him a new boat.
11:13White, I've been watching your work for a year.
11:17How would you like to go out in command of the White Star?
11:20You mean I'd be skipper?
11:21Yes.
11:22You have your papers, haven't you?
11:24Yes, sir.
11:25Fine.
11:26Of course, the job will carry with it a reasoned salary of $50 a month.
11:32Thank you, Mr. Granger.
11:33No.
11:34Well, all right, White.
11:35I'm glad to do it.

12:13She'll be glad to hear it.
12:15Good enough.

13:17Oh, so he's been showing off his treasures again.
13:20Yeah.
13:21Well, see you in swimming.
13:25That'll be a break for me.
13:40Snap out of it, buddy, and snap fast.
13:43It wouldn't be hard to take.
13:45Oh, no?
13:46Do you still want to work for Granger?
13:49Oh, boy, have I got news.
13:51I'm the new skipper of the White Star.
13:53What?
13:54The big boss gives you a boost, and then you start right out on the make for
13:57his dame.
13:59Oh, don't get that way.
14:01You got to admit, she's just as trim as any ship of the line.
14:04Kid wise.
14:05Them dames is dynamite.
14:09So you're a captain.
14:11Well, guess we ought to get drunk and celebrate.

14:15We're going right home and tell Millie the good news.
14:18You certainly get around.
14:20A minute ago you were stuck on that dame.
14:23Hey, was your mother ever frightened by a bicycle?
14:47Millie?
14:48Oh, Millie?
14:50Home from the sea comes the sailor.
14:53Three rousing cheers.
14:57Yeah.
14:58Looks like a great welcome.
15:00Yeah.
15:01How about a little drink?
15:03It's an idea.

15:36Hey, Cookie?
15:37Yeah?
15:38About coming over to the house tonight for supper, I guess that's all.

15:55You sure can take the wind out of a guy's sails.
15:58Here I come home loaded with good news and happy as a kid with a new top.
16:02What is the good news?
16:05When I pulled up to the doctor this afternoon, the big boss sent for me.
16:08I went up to his office.
16:10Guess what he said?
16:13He congratulated you on another record-breaking haul of fish, I suppose.
16:17Fish.
16:18Oh, Larry, how I hate fish.
16:20This whole place smells of fish.
16:22Every time I hear the word, I want to scream.
16:25Hey!
16:28Don't get so high and mighty.
16:31Fish buy everything we got.
16:33Yes, and what have we got?
16:35This little cracker box for an apartment.
16:37Me wearing last summer's clothes.
16:39You haven't bought a suit since we've been married.
16:42Now what's the good news?
16:44Well, I'm skipper of the ship.
16:47And?
16:48And what?
16:50Well, don't you get something extra for it?
16:52Sure I do.
16:5450 smackers a month.
16:56I guess that bowls you over, don't it?
17:0050 bucks a month.
17:02Oh, Larry, why don't you try to make some real money?
17:05You're going to start that again, are you?
17:09But, Larry, what is 50 bucks a month?
17:12A lot of fellas make that in one night.
17:14Yeah.
17:15Some night, the coast guard's going to catch them dumping that booze
17:18and fill them full of lead.
17:20Oh, don't be so dumb, Larry.
17:22Everybody's doing it.
17:24And now with you in command of a boat, it's a cinch.
17:27They don't bother fishing boats anyway.
17:29And you could make a clean-up.
17:34You're not going to make a crook out of me.
17:36You and there's nobody else.
17:55Easy, Chad.
17:56Hang it over there.
17:59Easy, Chad.
18:01Right, bang it.
18:13That's it, boys.
18:15You can all pay me 15 more.
18:18You're a lucky stiff.
18:20Say, let me see your pill.
18:22Sure.
18:24There it is.
18:26You've got a shame to take the dough.
18:28Oh, yeah?
18:29Yeah.
18:30Hey, is there any other game you guys know?
18:33You think you can make it, buddy?
18:40Hey, Cookie.
18:41Yeah?
18:42Come on, I want to talk to you.
18:43Sure.
18:44I'm all through, fellas.
18:45Hey, what do you mean?
18:46You're going to quit now?
18:47Certainly.
18:48Why?
18:49After winning all our dough, five games in a row,
18:52taken apart, Ray.
18:54You cheap nickel snatcher.
18:56Hey, you can't call a friend of mine any names.

19:52And me ruling a perfectly good beef stew
19:54so you can go down tomorrow and collect your pay.
19:59I told you how it happened.
20:01A guy insulted me.
20:03Larry stepped in, and a guy clipped him on the chin.
20:06Oh, yeah?
20:07Yeah.
20:08It happened just like this.
20:11This is for such a big palooka, you can get up in the morning
20:13and fix your own breakfast.
20:22Say, who started all this?
20:24And where did you get the snoop full of your head
20:26when you came down here?
20:27I don't know.

20:42Oh, Millie and I had a battle.
20:44I walked out on her.
20:45You know the rest.
20:48I thought she'd be glad to hear the good news about the raise.
20:52She only laughed at me, said it was chicken feed.
20:59I know how they are.
21:04Say, Larry, I know how we can make a lot of dough.
21:09Tony Molino will give you two thousand bucks for a cargo of booze delivered behind the old machinery pier
21:16You're Joe
21:18Well, why not they're all doing it
21:20I take two thousand dollars and throw it over your shoulder that two of us could grab the boat
21:25Slip out after it was dark clean up the whole deal and be back before daylight
21:29Why it's a cinch we can pick up some easy dough regular
21:33I'm gonna fool you. I'll do it. You make a deal with Tony and we'll pull it tomorrow night. Gee, that's great
21:40Say do you want to flop here tonight?
21:42Well, I don't feel much like going home. Well stay here. You can sleep in the spare room

23:41They made a break with their truck and shot their way out
23:44What boat landed the stuff a fishing boat fishing boat? Yeah
23:49That's a new racket. I'm sure that was one of the Yamato boats. You're not a liner
23:55Granger runs that outfit, don't he? Yeah, but you don't think Granger's mixed up in the booze racket. Do you cheat? No
24:01But someone working for him might be I'll have a talk with Granger in the morning anything more tonight
24:07Yes, take a run out the fish harbor and get a line on what boats were out tonight
24:11Okay, chief. Come on boys

27:14Now, White, don't lent mince words.
27:17I know what you've been doing with that boat.
27:20That means Granger knows, too.

27:25That means I'm true.
27:27You might have known you couldn't get away with a thing like that on one of those boats.
27:31What you need is a speedboat.
27:34Yeah.
27:37Granger hasn't got any speedboats.
27:39But I know where I can get one.
27:42Meaning what?
27:44If you want to continue on with this racket, I'll finance you.

38:56I see.
39:07Now get this truck and get her straight.
39:09The trouble with your squad is that you always
39:11get there just a little too late.
39:13Yeah, but we got the truck and the booze, didn't we?
39:15Yes, but I want what I want.
39:17The guy who runs it in.
39:18Well, that ought to be easy.
39:20He was wounded when he got away.
39:22I'll try the hospitals.
39:24He's too smart for that.
39:25Get a line on his wife.
39:27Watch her.
39:28Go around the places where he hangs out.
39:30Throw out a dragnet.
39:31And comb this town clean.
39:33I want that man.
39:34I want him now.
39:35Yes, but Chief, I...
39:36No buts about it.
39:37Now get going.

40:34I'll be home soon.
40:35All right.
40:36Well, goodbye.
40:37Bye-bye.
40:38Bye-bye.
40:39Goodbye.
40:40What's all the excitement?
40:42Is Larry here?
40:43Why, no.
40:44He's with Cookie.
40:45They were running in some stuff tonight.
40:47Somebody tipped off the federal agent.
40:49Cookie got away with the boat.
40:50But Larry was wounded.
40:53Well, where is he?
40:55Well, we don't know.
40:56Cookie phoned all the hospitals, but he can't locate him.
41:02And he didn't come home.
41:07He's with her.
41:10That's where he is.
41:11He's with her.
41:18Millie, what are you going to do?
41:21I'm going to settle this thing once and for all.
41:23Listen, you can't do that.
41:25Can't I?
41:26Well, I'm going to.
41:30Millie!
41:31Mabel, you keep out of this.
41:33This is my affair.
41:41Come in.
41:46You're late.
41:47You kept me waiting.
41:48I think it's worth waiting for, Mr. Granger.
41:50Well, what did you find out?
41:53They've shattered Miss Bainbrick 24 hours a day
41:56for the past week.
41:57You're right.
41:58There is a man.
41:59Who is he?
42:00What's his name?
42:01His name is Larry White.
42:03He used to work for you, I believe.
42:05Larry White?
42:06That's him.
42:07And if you're interested, he's up in her apartment right now.
42:11He's up there now?
42:13Yep.
42:14Just had a phone call from one of our men
42:16who's in an apartment across the court.
42:20That's all.
42:21Thanks.
42:22I'll mail you a check in the morning.
42:24That's perfectly all right, Mr. Granger.
42:26And the other little job, I'm pleased to serve you.
42:29All right.
42:38Larry White.
42:55Gladstone.
42:561865.
43:38Miss Bainbrick's apartment right here, miss.
43:40Thanks.
44:01I don't think it's smart to call a doctor tonight.
44:03But if your temperature is up in the morning,
44:05we'll have one hot or cold.
44:06Oh, don't worry about me.
44:08I'll be all right.
44:10Of course you're all right.
45:06Help me out with this, will you?
45:08You think you'd better?
45:10Sure.
45:18Well, this finishes things.
45:20I don't want you to try this again.
45:22You're going to give up the racket.
45:24I can't.
45:25I can't.
45:26I can't.
45:27I can't.
45:28I can't.
45:29I can't.
45:30I can't.
45:31I can't.
45:32I can't.
45:33I can't.
45:34I can't.
45:35I can't give up the racket.
45:36I can't give up the racket.
45:37I can't quit it now.
45:43What do you mean you can't give it up?
45:45Oh, I gotta go on now.
45:47Millie's used to money.
45:49She'd leave me in a minute.
45:51What do you care?
45:52I've only seen her once and then at a distance.
45:54What you can see in that selfish,
45:56empty-headed little pool is beyond me.
46:04to you. But you see I'm really in love with Millie it isn't
46:09a surprise I've always suspected the only reason I ever went into this was because
46:14she wanted me to. See Millie want money and he's
46:20both and you're going to keep on giving them to her I suppose so. I've always
46:26hoped that something would happen that would bring it both to our senses. Maybe
46:32this is it just popping into bed.
46:40Well I was just about to retire when Mr White dropped in for
46:44a moment. Sorry I felt that won't wash I know better I
46:50want to you mean. I told you once there was one thing I
46:56valued more than anything in this world. I valued it because I was
47:02never entirely sure that I owned it. You. Know I'm
47:09going to kill you just as I would expect you to kill me if I had robbed you of
47:15the thing you value the most Jim this is all
47:18a terrible mistake. Come on Larry I'm ready.
47:25Oh I beg your pardon.
47:33This is Mr Granger there. My wife Mr Granger.
47:42How do you do how do you do it's going to be so often I've always felt that I knew
47:47you. Are you ready here. We'll be dropped in for
47:53a moment. I'll ring in the morning maybe we can shop and have lunch.
47:58Yes of course. Good night Mr Granger good night.
48:14I'm sorry. I can't tell you how sorry I am it's all right Jim.
48:21We all make mistakes sometimes you're hurt.
48:25It's. Hardly a scratch. And how do you know I was here.
48:33Maybe tell me what happened when you didn't come home I I guess where you were.
48:38And I suppose I ought to thank you for keeping Granger from making
48:41a target out of me no Larry you haven't anything to thank me for.
48:48And why did you lie to Granger about the reason I was here. Because I'm to blame for
48:54the mess you're in. Yes Larry oh I've been
48:58a selfish little fool. I only thought I wanted pretty clothes and soft living.
49:04I never knew real happiness when I had it. I know now that the only thing I ever
49:09really wanted to do. Well that's
49:13a mighty pretty speech but it's too late. A lot of people want me now.
49:20And the cops will grab me before I get a chance to beat it out of this town.
49:32If you're not going to beat it Larry. What do you mean I'm not you're going to give
49:37yourself up now tonight plead guilty it won't go so hard for you. I suppose you
49:43think that a stretch in the pen would be easy. Oh but you can't get away from them
49:48besides it's your only chance for
49:49a clean start and it's my only chance to make up for all the grief I've got you you
49:54will won't you Larry.
49:59Going down Mr White. No.
50:07I guess I'm going up.
50:17But
50:26this car is registered in the name of the Reverend John Antwistle Yeah I know that's
50:31why it's called all right you'll be down in a minute.
50:48That's what I call service.
50:56Well why are you ready to go with it. Sure.
51:03Milly you better go over and stay with Mabel tonight you'll hear from me in the
51:07morning.
51:18The.
51:38People versus Larry White the defendant will approach the bar for sentence.
51:48Have you any legal cause to show why a sentence should not be pronounced on your
51:53honor.
51:57The charge of which the defendant stands guilty is one which the court does not
52:01treat lightly in fact this court has never in the past shown leniency on this
52:07charge however the facts at fault in the probation officers report. The defendant
52:13the defendant's past good behavior. And his former employers believe in him.
52:22And his service to his country. Outweighs the precedence of this court. A
52:29probationary order will be made.
52:33The defendant is sentenced to one year of penal servitude which sentence is
52:39suspended for the period of two years the defendant will during that time keep
52:44himself in the direction of the court strictly obey all laws and will report
52:51monthly in person for the probation.
52:54Being exonerated.
52:56And.
53:08Larry.
53:13Oh Larry you're free. Then let me off with
53:17a suspended sentence I'm on probation. I prayed all morning long.
53:24I guess it's the first time I've prayed since I used to say no I lay me down to
53:27sleep when I was a kid. I guess your prayers were answered all right.
53:32Granger dropped in out of nowhere testified to my good character that helped that in
53:38my Navy record that didn't do any hurt. I'm so happy I feel sort of giddy.
53:44Giddy.
53:51Larry Granger said he'd give me my job back again. Well.
53:58Going to be different now. No more big dough just plugging along I don't care at
54:04least if it's honest and it's clean. Fish business clean. I won't ever
54:11complain again. You did the trick you made
54:16a hit with Granger. I don't want to make
54:20a hit with Granger. I only want to make a hit with you. Now and
54:26forever. You love me don't you bet I do.
54:32I'm different. Give us another kiss when you're there.
