Regina Spektor was born in Moscow and emigrated with her family when she was nine. After settling in the Bronx, she became active in the East Village's anti-folk scene and released two self-produced albums. Her third, "Soviet Kitsch," was picked up and distributed by Sire Records in 2004. It was followed, in 2006, by "Begin to Hope" and, last year, by "Far." She is currently writing the score for a theatrical adaptation of "Sleeping Beauty."Michael Specter is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of "Denialism."
