Nobody Beats the Wiz (1988)

This is a commercial for an electronics/appliance store called "The Wiz," but went by its slogan "Nobody Beats the Wiz" (All signage has such written on it). It was established in New York City in 1977, was acquired by Cablevision in 1998 shortly after the chain filed for bankruptcy.

This chain closed permanently in 2003. While based primarily in New York and New Jersey (this was a local advertisement from a NYC CBS station), there were locations throughout the Northeastern United States. It's closure, according to wikipedia, leaves P.C. Richard & Son as the region's only local electronics store.

However, this was 1988, and times were nicer...and more innocent, at least for me, but I was only six when this ad aired. Santa Claus plugs a really sweet Nintendo (NES) package for $149 (honestly, it would be a STEAL now when you see all the goodies you get in this package). but, in 1988, $149 was ALOT of money.

My last glimpse of a Nobody Beats the Wiz store was the Seacaucus, New Jersey location, whose signage overlooks the highway leading to the Lincoln Tunnel (Route 3). It looks like a huge warehouse - I think there is a CompUSA there now. Correct me if I'm wrong!!!
