Vintage: The Ford Mustang | Drive it!

Ford unveiled the Mustang in Flushing Meadows, New York, on April 17, 1964. It was an instant sensation - the first car designed and priced especially for younger drivers. And it was affordable. Listed at just $2,368 it launched a new genre, the Pony Car. It also touched off Mustang mania in the United States, with four million people taking Ford showrooms by storm. Dealers had to lock their doors to keep the crowds under control. A staggering 22,000 orders came in the very first day - a world record. Ford could barely keep up. The first Mustangs proved particularly appealing to women. Gail Wise, 22 years old at the time, snapped up the very first Mustang sold and recalls how it made her an instant local celebrity.
