Action / Western (1938) 65 minutes ~ Black & White

A daring gang of outlaws hi-jack a carload of raw silk from s speeding freight train. They load the silk onto three trucks, the gang-leader instructs the driver to take a different route, and they will all meet in the distant town of Cosmopolitan. One of the trucks skids into a bar-ditch, and the gangsters flag down a passing truck that carries three saddle horses. The truck passengers are The Three Mesquiteers: "Stony" Brooke (Robert Livingston), "Tucson" Smith (Ray Corrigan) and "Lullaby" Joslin (Max Terhune), who stop to give aid and are held up by the robbers. The robbers in turn load the silk onto the Mesquiteer's truck, take the truck and also with it the Mesquiteers. A posse catches up and the outlaws are killed in the skirmish, and the sheriff thinks the Mesquiteers are also part of the gang. The trio manages to escape and have to stay one jump ahead of the law while trying to catch the real robbers and prove their own innocence.

07:02The other trucks got through, okay?
07:04We'll all meet at Mike's place in about an hour.
07:06Yeah.
07:07You're taking them curves kind of fast,
07:09ain't you, Frank?
07:10So what?
07:11If you don't like it, you can get out and walk.
07:13Hey, quit beeping, will ya?
07:15We're doing okay.
07:16Okay.
07:36I told you not to go so fast.
07:38Ah, shut up. We're lucky to be alive.
07:46Hey, listen.
07:48That sounds like a truck coming.
07:50Maybe it's Mack and the boys.
07:56Hey, Mack.
07:57You wouldn't be on this road.
08:00We're using the truck anyhow.
08:02You guys duck out of sight, I'll flag them down.
08:10I'm sure glad to be getting home.
08:12Them rodeos kind of tucker me out.
08:15Old age creeping up on him.
08:17Is that so?
08:18Let me tell you something, young fellow.
08:20My rattling boom didn't keep me from winning
08:22some of that prize money.
08:23We did all right.
08:25Well, I don't see why we had to hightail it out of town
08:27the minute it was over.
08:29We did it, my little man, to keep you from blowing
08:31your prize money on that blonde.
08:33You know, the one with the gimme eyes?
08:35Yeah, the one you thought was secure.
08:38Say, what's that up ahead?
08:45What's the matter, stranger?
08:47Hey, there's a guy hurt down here.
08:48Give me a hand, will you, fellas?
08:49Why, sure.
09:03Say, you did crack up.
09:05Now, where's your pal?
09:06Under there.
09:07Reach for it.
09:09Stay where you are.
09:14OK, Frank, come on out.
09:17Take that gun, Fleppy.
09:21That was swell, Joe.
09:23They fell for it like a ton of bricks.
09:25Say, what is this?
09:26Your funeral, if you're not careful.
09:28OK, it's your show.
09:29What's the setup?
09:30We're using your truck to move our stuff.
09:32Oh, and leave us high and dry, I suppose.
09:34Not a chance.
09:35You're going to load your truck and then drive
09:37us where we're going.
09:38Where are you going?
09:39You'll find out.
09:42Silk thieves, huh?
09:43Silk thieves, huh?

13:43We're only doing driving.
13:45You're under arrest.
13:47We're not the men you want.
13:49These two are dead.
13:50Take care of them.
13:55What's up, officer?
13:56I'm holding these men as suspects in the Desert Express robbery.
14:00These are the men that killed Henley.
14:02That's why they tried to shoot it out and make their getaway.
14:04Well, you're crazy.
14:05The men you killed are the real crooks.
14:06They held us up, and we can prove it.
14:08Passing the buck, eh?
14:10Come on.
14:11We're taking you in.
14:12But you've got to listen.
14:13We'll listen plenty at the trial.
14:15Why not try them right now?
14:16We've got a jury here.
14:17Yeah, try to make it easy, boys.
14:19I don't want any rough stuff.
14:20Stand back.
14:21The law will deal with them.
14:22We're the law, and you better step aside.
14:24I'm warning you, stay back.
14:26I'll shoot the first one that lays a hand on these men.
14:28You'll just have to shoot, Jed.
14:29Come on, men.
14:30Now, wait a minute, boys.
14:31Listen a minute.
14:32All right, boys, start reaching.
14:34Drop those guns.
14:37Hey, Toussaint, drill those tires.
14:47Move back.
14:51Celebi.
14:53Sling them.
15:07You're making a mistake, young fella.
15:09I'd make a worse one if I hung around here for a necktie party.
15:12Well, get your truck started.
15:14I'll hold them.
15:15Good day, gentlemen.
15:25They can't get far.
15:26I've got a two-way radio in my car.
15:37Fine mess we're in now.
15:39Why didn't you keep cool?
15:40Oh, I realize I made a mistake.
15:42I should have kept cool.
15:43I let them hang you.
15:44Well, we might have stood trial.
15:45Yeah, in another minute, we'd have been standing on air.
15:47How about it, Lullaby?
15:48Don't ask me.
15:49I'm just here for the ride.
15:51Well, Brains, what now?
15:52Well, we've got to round up that gang
15:54that engineered this robbery.
15:55It's the only way we can clear ourselves.
15:57Oh, so there's a gang now, huh?
15:59Well, there must be.
16:00The crooks we met could have engineered this alone.
16:03That makes sense.
16:04OK, where do we start looking?
16:08Where they're heading for, Cosmopolis.
16:11Well, I'm going to saddle up, just in case.
16:18Make it snappy, boys.
16:19We're not waiting for the other truck.
16:20OK.
16:21Come on, Speed.
16:22Right.
16:24Joe and his boys ought to be along any minute, Mac.
16:26I'll check them right on through.
16:27Right.
16:28Joe and his boys ought to be along any minute, Mac.
16:30I'll check them right on through.

16:57Hi.
16:58What can I do for you?
16:59Fill her up.
17:00Say, can I use your phone?
17:01Sure, right inside.
17:02Thanks.
17:03How about Tucson?
17:04Oh, I'll let him sleep.
17:05Get the gas, Mark.
17:10Where's the phone, bud?
17:11Right over there.
17:12Thanks.
17:20Long distance, please.
17:24I want John Harker in the Harker building, mesquite.
17:31What's that?
17:33Redwood, 131.
17:37OK.
17:39She'll call us back in a few minutes.
17:40We'll have to wait.
17:42Hey, buddy, got any more of that coffee?
17:44Yeah, I'll have two sets.
17:49Well, if I were in luck.
17:51Yes, me.
17:52We're in a jam.
17:53Oh, don't worry about it.
17:54We'll get in touch with Harker.
17:55He'll identify us.
17:56That'll make everything OK.
17:59Attention, please.

19:00Get over there.
19:03Tie him up.
19:04Say, Phillips, you ought to collect a reward
19:06when the sheriff hears about this.
19:09I wouldn't start spending that money if I were you.
19:12Take their guns, Tony.
19:15Get him.
19:20Pretty smart hombres, ain't you?
19:22Too smart to let you collect a reward on the wrong men.
19:25What do you mean?
19:26Just this, you can tell the sheriff for us
19:28that we're not the men they want.
19:30Yeah, go on.
19:31The real crooks wrecked their own truck
19:33and they held us up and made us carry their swag.
19:36That's what happened, isn't it?

19:56All right, boys, hold it.
20:26Get over for the door.
20:28You, too.
20:40Hold him, Lullaby.

21:13Lullaby!
21:35Lullaby!

22:35Population, 3,000.
22:37Sounds like a right healthy community.
22:39Let's go take a look at it.
22:41Nothing doing.
22:42Not with 3,000 bloodhounds looking for it.
22:44All right, creep hangers.
22:45So I'll go take a look.
22:46You two stay here.
22:47If anybody goes, it'll be Lullaby.
22:49I want you where I can keep my eyes on you.
22:51Hey, there!
22:53Let's go.
22:54Let's go.
22:55Let's go.

23:04Let's go.
23:05What are you running for?
23:06Look.
23:08Say, listen, I wonder if you boys would lend me a hand.
23:11You see, we've had a little accident up the road.
23:14My truck broke down and...
23:16Where have we heard that before?
23:18I suppose you blew a tire and crashed off the road.
23:20Oh, no.
23:21No, no.
23:22No, you see, some faulty mechanism
23:24has caused the gasoline to escape.
23:26He speaks English.
23:27I'm sorry, mister.
23:28We're in a hurry.
23:29I reckon you'll just have to look after your own truck.
23:31Oh, well, I know.
23:32But boys, you see, I have a son and a daughter that...
23:35Did you say daughter?
23:37Yes, yes.
23:38Surely you wouldn't leave a young lady stranded.
23:40Why, no.
23:41We couldn't do that.
23:42So I guess we'll have to help him.
23:45Where's your truck?
23:46Where?
23:47Oh, it's just up the bend a little bit.
23:49You boys are certainly very kind indeed.
23:51What's your racket, brother?
23:54Racket?
23:55Oh, yes, of course.
23:56Yes.
23:57Gentlemen, permit me to introduce myself.
23:59I am Dr. Algernon Irving.
24:01Yes.
24:02Of the college, the Atlantic College, I may say.
24:04The Atlantic College of Medicine
24:06and Psychological Research.
24:08That is formally.
24:09But recently, my friends, the inventor,
24:11the discoverer, and the marketer
24:13of Irving's famous tonics.
24:15My friends, I don't care what's wrong with you.
24:17If you've got rheumatism, lumbago, sciatica,
24:19fallen arches, dandruff.
24:21Listen, this remedy, my friends,
24:23has been used by all the dead heads.
24:25Or at least, I meant to say bald heads.
24:27Troubled heads of Europe, my friends.
24:29It'll cure you.
24:30I don't care what's wrong with you.
24:31You can have sinus trouble.
24:32You can have lumbago, sciatica, rheumatism, gout,
24:34aches and pains.
24:36Irving's remedies, my friends,
24:38are a guaranteed cure for all human ailments.
24:41Such as the...
24:42We haven't got it.
24:43Let's get going.
24:44Oh, you have?
24:45Oh, I see what you mean.
24:46Yes, of course.
24:47But you gentlemen are certainly
24:49doing me a very great favor.
24:52You're, you're livery, son.
24:53You know that, don't you?
24:54Now, it's just up the road, just a bit here.
24:57I'm getting awfully tired of playing boy scout.
24:59I guess we'll have to tow you.
25:12Come on out of there, buddy.
25:13Your troubles are over.
25:14Hey!
25:16What do you think you're doing?
25:17Oh, I'm awfully sorry.
25:18I thought you were him.
25:20Allow me to rectify the error, gentlemen.
25:22This is my daughter, Madge.
25:24It's a pleasure.
25:25Oh, this is my boy, Timothy, here.
25:28Hi.
25:29And your names, gentlemen?
25:31Oh, just call us the Three Musketeers.
25:33Musketeers?
25:34Oh, what do you do?
25:35A song and dance?
25:36Or, or a dumb act?
25:38Oh, you know, sis.
25:39They're like the three musketeers I read about.
25:41One for all and all for one.
25:43Yeah, all for one.
25:46The nearest town is Cosmopolitan.
25:48We'll tow you there.
25:52We're not going to Cosmopolitan.
25:54Why not?
25:55Have you forgotten that we're wanted there?
25:57Have you forgotten that we're wanted men?
26:01We'll join up with this outfit.
26:03They'd never think to look for us in a medicine show.
26:05Yeah, but...
26:06I'll handle it.
26:07Hey, Lullaby, get out Elmer.
26:16Doctor...
26:17I was just thinking,
26:18entering into a thriving town like Cosmopolitan,
26:21you should have an added attraction.
26:22Yes, I know, but...
26:23And here it is, my pals and me.
26:26You don't mean to tell me that you,
26:28you boys are performers?
26:29Exhibition riders.
26:30We just won a lot of prize money in a Cheyenne rodeo.
26:34Cash prizes?
26:35Well, I took in 500 in a bronc riding contest.
26:38Well, my goodness.
26:40How interesting.
26:42Lullaby, come on up.
26:48Now, Lullaby here has an act that's a sensation.
26:51I lay him in the aisle.
26:52Right in the aisle.
26:54Oh boy, can I hold him?
26:55Sure.
26:56Careful, Sonny, I'm real easy.
26:58Well, my goodness, a ventriloquist, eh?
27:01You know, my dear,
27:02I feel that I should foster budding talent.
27:05I'm sure that you and your friends
27:08will prove a valuable addition to our little company.
27:11In fact, I might even consider taking you into partnership.
27:15But of course, we'll discuss that later.
27:17Well, thanks, Doc.
27:18Hey, how about getting out of here?
27:21Timothy, take good care of Elmer.
27:23I will.
27:24He will, he'll watch out for you.
27:26Likely prospects, my dear, very likely.
27:29Lay off.
27:49Where are all the people?
27:51Search me.
27:52Why, I don't see a soul.
27:54I'm afraid you're not going to.
27:55Well, I certainly don't understand this.
27:57My goodness, look at all these deserted buildings.
28:00Like an oil town that boomed out.
28:02A modern ghost town.
28:04Golly, I want to see any ghosts.
28:07I'm hungry.
28:08Well, let's look around,
28:10and maybe we can find some grub.
28:12That's an idea.
28:16You stay here, Hopshock.
28:22Well, I don't think we're going to find anything to eat in this place.
28:24No.
28:25Howdy, folks.
28:31Well, hello there.
28:33Just passing through?
28:34Yes, my friends are here.
28:36I'm afraid we ain't got any of that.
28:38What, if you'd like to have a bite to eat?
28:41Of course I'd like to have a bite to eat.
28:43Well, I'm afraid we ain't got any of that.
28:45Well, I'm afraid we ain't got any of that.
28:47Well, I'm afraid we ain't got any of that.
28:49Well, I'm afraid we ain't got any of that.
28:51What are we?
28:52We're stars.
28:53I reckon I can fix you up with that
28:55if you just come along with me to the cafe.
28:57Well, say, now, that's very kind of you, my good man.
28:59Oh, that's all right.
29:01Glad to help you.
29:02It's just down here still.
29:04Oh, yes, let's see.
29:09Well, here we be.
29:10Seems very fancy, but I like it.
29:13Oh, boy, oh, boy, oh, boy, what are we going to eat?
29:16Quiet, Elmer.
29:21Sit right down, folks.
29:23We ain't got such a lot to choose from,
29:25but what we have is good.
29:27Well, that's all right.
29:29Yes, sit.
29:32What do you say to some nice, thick steaks?
29:35Oh, that's good.
29:38Make mine rare.
29:39Mine's plenty big.
29:40Just smother mine with artichokes.
29:42Well, I'm afraid we've plumbed out artichokes.
29:44But we've got some nice, fresh coffee.
29:46And Wong Fu is just as good.
29:48Well, sir, that sounds perfect, my friend.
29:50Yes, sir, food for the gods.
29:52I'm so hungry, I could eat a ghost.
29:55Fried on both sides?
29:57Quiet, Elmer.
29:58Listen, Elmer, whenever that food comes in,
30:02don't eat too much.
30:04You never see me make a hog of myself.
30:06Now you're already one.
30:10Wang Fu!
30:11Wang Fu, I want you to meet some of our guests.
30:15Why don't you take these folks' orders?
30:18Hey, Wong Fu is one of the best cooks in the country.
30:21Yes, sir, I've had him with me for years.
30:25Wong Fu, cook up some of them steaks now and hurry.
30:29Yes, sir.
30:30Yes, sir.
30:31Yes, sir.
30:32Yes, sir.
30:33Yes, sir.
30:34Yes, sir.
30:35Yes, sir.
30:36Yes, sir.
30:37Yes, sir.
30:38Yes, sir.
30:39Yes, sir.
30:40Hurry.
30:41These folks is hungry.
30:43Yeah, and we're going to stay hungry.
30:45I'm afraid I am.
30:47I knew it.
30:49Yes, sir, I knew it.
30:51Well, eat hearty, folks.
30:53If you'll excuse me.
30:55Hey, just a minute.
30:57Have you seen any mining trucks around here lately?
30:59Mining trucks?
31:00Yeah.
31:03You mean with them big double wheels?
31:05Yeah, that's right.
31:06Painted gray.
31:07Did you see one like that?
31:08Yeah.
31:09Now, let me see.
31:12That's a long ago.
31:14Around five, six.
31:17Maybe near seven.
31:19Yep.
31:21One of them big gray trucks drove through here about seven years ago.
31:28I...
31:29Never mind.
31:30Just let it go.
31:35Plum slug nutty.
31:36Yes.
31:37Yes, indeed.
31:38It's clearly a psychopathic case.
31:41Homer, I'm ashamed of you.
31:43Must have been some...
31:44Hurry up.
31:45I want to eat.
31:46Well, I want to get out of here.
31:48Well, we'll ride to the next town and get some gas and groceries.
31:51Wait a minute.
31:57Three of us in town at one time would be too much of a coincidence.
32:00Hey, that's right.
32:04You and Lullaby go.
32:06Why us?
32:07Well, the folks will have to stay in the hotel tonight
32:09and I just thought that I could get them settled.
32:12Mm-mm.
32:13You would.
32:16Well, let's see what the inside of this hotel looks like, huh?
32:18Yeah, sure.
32:19That's a good idea.
32:20Come on, Timmy.
32:21Hurry up.
32:22So long, Wong.
32:37Meg.
32:38Philip.
32:46Stop loading those trucks and come up here.
32:48But El Paso's in a hurry for the silk.
32:50You heard me.
32:51Stop loading this.
32:52Okay, you're the boss.
32:54Take it easy, boys.
32:55Relax.
33:07What's the matter, Chief?
33:08Take a look down the street.
33:17Say, them's the three cowboys that stopped at my place yesterday.
33:21I thought they answered your description.
33:23There's $5,000 a ward offer for them birds, dead or alive.
33:26Let's take them.
33:27No.
33:28No.
33:29No.
33:30No.
33:31No.
33:32No.
33:33No.
33:34No.
33:35No.
33:36They're dead or alive.
33:37Let's take them.
33:38Wait.
33:39I've got a better plan.
33:41You drive over to Canyon Springs, tell the sheriff that you happened to come
33:45through Cosmopolis and spotted them.
33:47Yeah, but suppose them other two don't come back?
33:49Don't worry.
33:50They'll come back.
33:51Well, they couldn't find a safer place to hide than a ghost town like this.
33:56Notifying the sheriff makes us good law-abiding citizens and adds $5,000 to the treasure.
34:03I get it.
34:04I'll get going right away.
34:22That's everything but the gas.
34:34Fat.
34:35Homeless.
34:37Nutcracker jaw.
34:39Squint eyes.
34:40Say, who the heck do you think they're talking about?
34:43It's forgery or larceny.
34:46What did you say?
34:47Forgery.
34:48That's what it is.
34:49Why, he ain't a bad-looking hombre at all.
34:53Him.
34:54And he's a real upstanding, intelligent-looking man.
34:57And he ain't fat, neither.
34:59He's just fat.
35:00Upstanding, intelligent-looking man.
35:02And he ain't fat, neither.
35:04He's just a little muscle-bound.
35:06You know him?
35:08No, but I seen him once.
35:11Better keep your eyes peeled.
35:12Maybe you can nab off that reward.
35:20Give me a gallon of gasoline, partner.
35:30Thanks.
35:56Thanks, Sonny.
35:57Here's your money.
36:00I reckon you could use that reward money.
36:03Yes, indeedy.
36:04I'd get a lot of pleasure out of stringing him up.
36:06Have?
36:07I say, hanging's too good for him.
36:09Oh.
36:20What are you made up for?
36:21We've got to scram.
36:22The town's blasted with the reward notices.
36:26There they are, Sheriff.
36:28Hey, you two.
36:29Hey, you two.
36:36Come on, men.
36:59Come on, men.
37:29Get your horses, Sheriff.
37:59Sheriff's calling us with a posse.
38:00Here's your groceries.
38:01Get back in the hotel.
38:02What's happened?
38:03Never mind.
38:04Get back in the hotel.
38:29Get back in the hotel.
38:59That's what I call a cloche.
39:02No trick, but it comes in handy.
39:04Well, let's give the horses a breather.
39:06And maybe one of you birds will tell me
39:08just how this picnic started.
39:12Bastard.
39:14Shattered.
39:15Utterly shattered my faith in human nature.
39:19And to think that I trusted them desperados.
39:24$5,000.
39:26I suppose it was their horses that ran out of gas.
39:28I'll get the suitcases.
39:30All right.
39:31Now listen here, my dear child.
39:32You realize that we might have been slaughtered
39:34by them desperados and our bones left
39:36a bleach out on the desert waste?
39:38Oh, stop acting, Pop.
39:39Why, they were decent and kind to us.
39:41Risked their lives to get us provisions.
39:43And I don't care what the Sheriff said.
39:45I don't believe they're criminals.
39:46Neither do I, sis.
39:47I think they're swales.
39:49My children both take after me.
39:51They're too trusting.
39:53$5,000.
39:54Oh, well.
40:19Hotshot!
40:23Hotshot!
40:27Hotshot, come here!
40:53Come on.
41:07Hotshot, come here.
41:12Come on.
41:19Wait a minute.
41:23Get over there, Hotshot.
41:25Here.
41:26Now hold it.
41:28Hold it.
41:31Come on.
41:53You stay here.
42:23Snap it up, boys.
42:24And we're shoving off the minute
42:25that fake doctor leaves town.
42:26Don't you think it would be smart
42:27to lay low for a while?
42:28Oh, forget it.
42:29No one suspects we even exist,
42:31let alone you kill the brakeman
42:32and rob the Silk Express.
42:39What was that?
42:40Spike, catch that kid!
42:47Spike!
42:48Spike!
42:49Spike!
42:50Spike!
42:51Spike!
42:52Let me go!
42:53Let me go!
42:54Where'd he come from?
42:55It's the Irving kid.
42:56Yeah, and he's probably got an earful.
42:58You're the real robbers.
43:00Too bad you left, kid.
43:02You're only a small boy,
43:03but you should learn to mind your own business.
43:05We'll have to take him along
43:07and drop him off over the county line.
43:09Mac, get a rope and tie him up.
43:11Now the rest of you, get ready to travel.
43:13Let me go!
43:14Let me go!
43:18Al, put the kid in the truck.
43:20And don't hurt him.
43:21Let me go!
43:22Let me go!
43:32All right, boys, let's go.
43:42All set.
43:43Okay.
43:51Hmm.
43:57Hup.
44:03Hup.
44:21Hup.
44:51Can't go home.
44:53Can't even show our faces long enough
44:55to put in a phone call to our lawyer.
44:58Oh, stop being so cheerful.
45:00All right, wise guy,
45:01suppose you tell me
45:02how we're gonna get out of this jam.
45:04Too early in the morning.
45:06How do you reckon that fella Phillips
45:08happened to tip off the sheriff
45:09that we was in car's mottles?
45:11Why don't you ask me an easy one?
45:14Hey, fellas, there's a truck coming.
45:21That truck looks like the same kind
45:23those silk thieves were driving
45:24when they held us up.
45:25Hey, there's another truck.
45:30There's a dog chasing it.
45:35It's Jim's police dog.
45:37You're right, it is.
45:38And that's Phillips driving.
45:40Let's find out why that dog's chasing Phillips.
45:42Come on.
45:51Come on.
46:21Hurry down on her, Phillips.
46:22It looks like trouble.
46:51Come on.
47:21Come on.
47:33The kid, hold it.
47:39Columbine, take care of Phillips.
47:41Go try and get the kid.
47:51Come on.
48:18All right, Phillips, the joy ride's over.
48:20Got it.
48:22Take a look and see if Phillips has come.
48:28He ain't in sight.
48:30Slow down a little.
48:31Let him catch up a little.
48:39Come on, get out of there.
48:45Come on, Hotshaw.
48:50You fellas got here just in time.
48:52Uh-huh, so did Hotshaw.
48:53You know that crazy fella?
48:55Well, he ain't crazy after all.
48:57He's the leader of the silk robbers.
48:59He went ahead in that other truck.
49:01If we want to clear ourselves, he's the man we gotta get.
49:03Hey, Lullaby, take care of Phillips, will you?
49:05Tucson, let's get that other truck.
49:10Jimmy, I got an idea.
49:12Come on, big boy.
49:20Come on.
49:50The only way to stop them is to plug their tires.
49:56Look.
50:01Those two cowboys.
50:02Step on it.
50:10They got a tire.
50:20Come on.
50:32Maybe we'll collect that reward yet.
50:50Come on.
51:08Hey, look.
51:20Here comes Phillips now.
51:23Remember, no funny business.
51:36Howling in the back.
51:37Say, where's Lullaby?
51:41All right, boys, let's go.
51:50Come on, boys.
51:58Oh!
52:06Oh!
52:13Oh!
52:20You stay right where you are.
52:39Where have you boys been?
52:40Why?
52:41Look.
