Recently, a homeowner in Long Island rescued an elderly motorist who crashed a sport-utility vehicle into an in-ground swimming pool.

On Monday, at approximately 3:45 p.m. 79-year-old Joseph DiDonato had been behind the wheel of a 2010 Acura SUV when he mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

He lost control of the auto and plowed through the backyard fence of a home in the vicinity. The vehicle was left partially submerged in the deep-end side of the pool.

The homeowner, identified as 32-year-old John Bacchi, was in the yard when the vehicle landed in the water. He sprang into action and jumped in the pool.

Bacchi elaborated on the rescue stating “We couldn’t roll the window down, so I had my neighbor hand me something to smash the window. We smashed the window, and we just pulled him out.”

DiDonato was transported to a local hospital for an evaluation. He was said to be in stable condition.

Bacchi wasn’t injured and neither was his wife, who was also in the backyard when the SUV came barreling through.

The swimming pool was still under construction when the wreck occurred. As a result of the accident, the pool is now in need of major repairs.
