One of Mexico’s most notorious drug lords, Hector Beltran Leyva, has been captured by soldiers.

Authorities say he was arrested at a restaurant in a town in central Mexico where he had been living and posing as a local businessman.

DNA testing is being done to confirm his identity.

His cartel, known as the ABL, was responsible for trafficking drugs to the US and Europe, as well as murder, kidnapping and torture.

The head of the attorney general’s criminal investigations unit, Tomas Zeron said: “Hector Beltran Leyva is linked to at least 29 previous charges, with three arrest orders from this Attorney General of the Republic and from a federal order. The United States of America offered a reward of $5 million for his arrest

Beltran Leyva took over leadership of the cartel when his brother Arturo was killed in a shootout with Mexican troops in 2009. Two more brothers are already in prison.

The capture is being seen as a major victory for President Enrique Peña Nieto
