The search for survivors had already turned grim...the Tokyo Fire Department was finding bodies...hikers caught near the summit and killed in a hail of debris.

The eruption occurred with no warning. Hundreds of hikers were on the mountain, enjoying the autumn weather when it suddenly blew up. Many survivors found themselves trapped for hours before attempting a harrowing descent.

The death toll has surpassed 45, making it Japan's deadliest eruption since 1926, when 144 people were killed on the island of Hokkaido.

Although hampered by clouds of toxic gas, the search and rescue mission remains underway, but the death toll is expected to rise.
