New day of protest dawns in Hong Kong

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters awakened on Monday (September 29) for more demonstrations after spending the night on a main road in Hong Kong.

In the early hours of Monday riot police advanced on protesters, firing volleys of tear gas after launching a baton-charge in the worst unrest there since China took back control of the former British colony two decades ago.

Protesters remained on the many roads leading to the Central business district as day broke.

Police said hundreds of protesters were still at Causeway Bay and across the harbour to Mong Kok.

Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese rule under a formula known as "one country, two systems" that guaranteed a high degree of autonomy and freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China. Universal suffrage was set as an eventual goal.
