The New York Post has blown the lid off of what they’re calling a coverup involving the city’s mayor and one of its beloved icons.

According to the paper’s reports, Chuck the groundhog, New York City’s version of Punxsutawney Phil, died as a result of being dropped by Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The day of the alleged fatal mishandling was February 2nd.

During a Groundhog’s Day photo op, the mayor lost his hold on Chuck, and the high-profile mammal plummeted about 6 feet to the ground.

On February 9th, the animal was found dead. The zoo said the causes for the passing were natural.

A necropsy determined that the groundhog had died from internal injuries. The damage has been cited as being consistent with a fall.

There’s more.

The Post also dropped the bomb that the Chuck involved in the incident was an imposter, and it’s the zoo’s practice to replace the popular groundhog as needed without alerting the public.

They do so to protect the Chuck brand.

The mayor’s office has expressed condolences and said they were unaware that the animal had perished.
