Researchers in Dortmund are computerizing forests. The aim of the "Virtual Forest” project is to streamline and mechanize operations inside the woods. Equipped with sat-nav and laser scanners, robots are scanning the details of Germany's forests.
The information allows tree-harvesters to work with centimeter precision while minimizing damage to the environment. One day, the researchers would like to see their system in use all over Europe.
