Around a third of Germany is covered with trees, which is a much larger area than 200 years ago. Germans have always regarded the woods with affection and some fear, as evidenced by early fairy tales told by the Brothers Grimm and other authors.

Now the forest has become less a place of fear and more of a backdrop where the country goes to relax and wind down. But somehow the trees have retained a touch of the mystical here.
