Protesters in Tripoli's Martyrs Square on Friday (August 29) denounced a recent series of air strikes that they believe were staged by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates and called for the General National Congress (GNC) to be reinstated as the legitimate parliament of Libya.
On Sunday (August 24) residents in Libya's capital said that unidentified war planes attacked targets in Tripoli hours after a group called Operation Dawn, consisting mainly of fighters from the city of Misrata, seized Tripoli's main airport. There were also air strikes on Islamist-held positions on Monday (August 25).
The Misrata-led group, part of which is Islamist-leaning, now controls Tripoli and has pushed to reinstate the GNC. Islamists were much stronger in the GNC than in the new assembly dominated by liberal and federalist lawmakers.
