WEB USERS DIVIDED OVER DARREN WILSON
The authorities in Ferguson, USA have decided to end speculation over the identity of the police officer who fatally shot black teenager Michael Brown on August 10th. They released his name on Friday. He`s called Darren Wilson and he has worked for the State of Missouri police department for the past six years – debate is rife online.
While countless American web users have taken to social networks to condemn the officer, saying he is a murderer and calling for his arrest, others have shown support for the 28 year old man. The people who posted these messages to Twitter are holding Darren Wilson up as a hero, saying he was only doing his job. An opinion shared by the 32,000 people who liked this “I support officer Wilson” Facebook page.
The same slogan has been printed onto these t-shirts available to buy online. All profits will go to Darren Wilson`s family. There is also a crowdfunding campaign underway on the GoFundMe platform, which has so far raised over 19,000 dollars for the police officer.
But there is more condemnation that support on the web, where thousands of messages denouncing Darren Wilson`s act continue to pour in. The police department as a whole has also received criticism for resorting to violence far too often. Over 119,000 people have signed this petition addressed to the White House calling on the US government to create a law requiring all police officers wear cameras.
