Illegal sand mining taking place with the use of excavators on the river-bed of the Ganga or Ganges river, at Garhmukteshwar, Uttar Pradesh, India. Sand mining is a pernicious practice that depletes riverine flood plains of their fertile soil and upsets the embankments of the rivers, often exacerbating floods.
